Delta Downs Picks – Thursday, January 7, 2021
Delta Downs continues its thoroughbred racing week with a full nine-race schedule of maiden, claiming, and allowance matches.
And while I take a look here at the three richest races at Delta Downs for Thursday, remember that you can find their entire nine-race card — including horses, jockeys, M/L odds, and wagering options — at one of the best horse racing betting sites.
Read on for my predictions for Delta Downs for Thursday, January 7, 2021.
Picks for Race 5 at Delta Downs
This is a maiden special weight race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of 7-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $30,000.
I agree with the morning line, and my money is on the 8/5 favorite — Crimson Zip, ridden by Thomas Pompell. This four-year-old colt moneyed for of his five career starts, which included a third-place finish in Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes (Black Type) at Prairie Meadows.
I think at 20/1, Heather’s Request, with Odilon Martinez in the irons, is a good show ticket investment for this field. This five-year-old gelding moneyed his single career start with a third-place finish last September at Louisiana Downs.
- Win: Crimson Zip 8/5
- Show: Heather’s Request 20/1
Pick for Race 7 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of five furlongs for a purse of $36,000.
I’m sticking with the morning line’s choice in this race, as well, so I’m betting on the 9/5 favorite — Cool Spring, with Diego Saenz aboard. This six-year-old mare finished in the money 14 of her 19 career starts, winning four of them, which makes her tops in this field.
None of the longer-odds entries in this field look likely to finish in the money, so save yours for later.
- Win: Cool Spring 9/5
Picks for Race 8 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $31,000.
I’m going with the fourth-favored (6/1) entry in this race — Buxterhooter, ridden by Joel Dominguez. This six-year-old gelding finished in the money 19 of his 24 career starts, winning eight. He’ll see some strong competition here, but he really is the best horse in this field.
At 12/1, Coach Adams, with Alex Birzer aboard, is a good value show wager. This six-year-old gelding moneyed 20 of his 38 career starts, winning four.
- Win: Buxterhooter 6/1
- Show: Coach Adams 12/1
