Delta Downs Picks – Thursday, January 14, 2021
Delta Downs brings us a nine-race schedule Thursday of mostly claiming races sprinkled lightly with some good maiden and allowance matches.
I review the three richest races at Delta Downs, but you can find their full nine-race card for Thursday — including horses, jockeys, M/L odds, and wagering options — at one of our top online spacebooks.
Read on for my Delta Downs picks and betting tips for Thursday, January 14, 2021.
Pick for Race 2 at Delta Downs
This is a claiming race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $18,000.
The morning line’s odds for this race look upside-down from where they ought to be — until you take a look at the performance of each horse in this field for just the year 2020 — that’s when the morning line starts to make all kinds of sense.
That’s why I’m happily backing the 8/5 favorite here — Miss Ocean Express, with Alex Birzer in the irons. This eight-year-old mare moneyed 32 of her 56 career starts, winning 13 of them. Her 2020 record is four money finishes in six starts, with one win — which doesn’t sound particularly impressive until you start comparing her 2020 figures to those of the rest of the field.
Incidentally, none of the longer-odds entries in this race warrant the risk of a show bet, so save your money.
- Win: Miss Ocean Express 8/5
Picks for Race 4 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $32,000.
I’m backing the 3/1 favorite here — Frank the Mayor, with Timothy Thornton aboard. This four-year-old gelding moneyed four of his six career starts, winning two.
I should note that the 8/1 morning-line odds on the coupled entry conceals a sleeper — Bold Thirst, ridden by Devin Magnon. This four-year-old colt has a record nearly as good as that of the morning line favorite: Six money finishes in ten career starts, with two wins. I would recommend at least a show ticket, although an across the board here seems more advisable.
- Win: Frank the Mayor 3/1
- Show/Across the Board: Bold Thirst 8/1
Pick for Race 7 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for Louisiana-bred four-year-olds and upward running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $36,000.
I like the second-favored (5/2) entry here — Dodger, with Diego Saenz aboard. This four-year-old ridgling finished in the money three of his eight career starts, winning one.
None of the long-odds entries in this race are worth the risk of a show ticket.
- Win: Dodger 5/2
