Del Mar Racing Picks – Monday, September 7, 2020

Del Mar Racing ends its 81^st racing season with style on Monday, September 7, 2020 with two signature stakes matches on its nine-race card—the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes, and the Del Mar Futurity itself.

The forecast for Labor Day at Del Mar calls mostly sunny skies, highs in the mid-80s, and winds around 11 mph.

This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $57,000.

This could be a tight race, but my win ticket has the name of the 2/1 morning line favorite on it: Magic At Midnight, with Abel Cedillo in the irons. This four-year-old filly won all three of her career starts.

At 12/1, I think Shanghai Truffles, ridden by Tiago Pereira, is slightly undervalued here. This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her 13 starts, winning two of them.

This is the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes, a race for two-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $100,000.

Three early scratches have reduced this to a ten-horse field, and the morning line now thinks the 9/2 Rombauer, with Juan J. Hernandez aboard, will be the winner. Well, so do I. This colt won his single career start. Plus, winningest jockey.

The third- and the fourth-favored entries in this race are both at 10/1, and I believe only Big Fish, with Victor Espinoza in the irons, will live up to the morning line’s expectations. This gelding moneyed all three of his career starts, winning one of them. Show ticket only.

This is the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (Grade I), a stakes race for two-year-olds running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $250,000.

I like the morning line’s fourth-favored 6/1 entry—Weston, ridden by Drayden Van Dyke. This gelding won both of his career starts. The 9/5 morning line favorite, on the other hand, moneyed his three starts, winning one of them.

At 12/1, Dyn O Mite, with Victor Espinoza in the irons, looks good for a show ticket. This colt moneyed all three of his career starts.
