DC United vs. Philadelphia Union – MLS, May 23, 2021
Following a shaky start to the season, Philadelphia is on the rise. The 2020 Supporters’ Shield winners head into Week 6 on a four-match unbeaten streak, having seen off the Red Bulls last weekend.
On the flip side, DC United has already suffered four defeats in six games this year. Hernan Losada’s men have only managed to win one of their previous five outings, conceding ten goals along the way.
DC welcomes Philly to Audi Field on Sunday, May 23. In this betting preview, I check out the odds, analyze both sides, and give my DC United vs. Philadelphia Union prediction and pick.
Let’s get right into it!
DC United vs. Philadelphia Union Odds
It is worth noting that both of DC’s wins in 2021 have come on home soil. The betting sites still view the hosts as underdogs, but they have kept the odds relatively tight for this matchup.
That said, the Union has enjoyed playing away this year. Jim Curtin’s men claimed an impressive draw in Columbus on the opening weekend before beating Chicago on their travels.
Before we settle on a DC United vs. Philadelphia Union betting pick, we need to look closely at the teams.
DC United Team News and Analysis
After finishing second from bottom in the Eastern Conference last year, DC United stunned everyone by securing a shock 2-1 victory over New York City on the opening weekend of the 2021 season.
Granted, Losada’s men gave a good account of themselves in their 1-0 loss to New England in Week 2. But they were crushed 4-1 by San Jose the following weekend before going down 3-1 to Columbus.
DC managed to claim a slender 1-0 win over Chicago last week, although beating the Fire isn’t exactly difficult right now. Last time out, however, the Black-and-Red returned to losing ways – suffering a 1-0 defeat to Orlando.
With a record of 2-0-4, four teams currently sit below Losada’s men in the East. Still, only one side – bottom club FC Cincinnati – has conceded more goals.
Assessing Philly’s Recent Form
Alarm bells were ringing when the defending Supporters’ Shield champs took just one point from their opening three matches this year.
After drawing with the Crew, Philadelphia suffered back-to-back losses to Inter Miami and NYCFC.
The Union exploited struggling Chicago before being held by the Revs. The Red Bulls racked up 13 shots at PPL Park last weekend, yet Philly managed to hold on and claim a hard-fought victory.
Cory Burke scored the game’s only goal against RBNY, doubling his tally for the season in the process.
If Kacper Przybylko can carry his CONCACAF Champions League form into MLS, the U’s results will improve. The Polish striker has bagged five goals in four CCL matches this year while netting just once in six MLS appearances.
DC United vs. Union Betting Pick
Philadelphia Union to Win2.45
Having assessed the teams, I can’t quite believe that Philly is priced at 2.45 to win this one. Of course, DC has the home-field advantage on Sunday. But the Union has more than enough firepower to exploit the hosts’ leaky backline.
While Curtin’s men enjoy a four-match unbeaten streak, the Black-and-Red have lost four of their last five games. Needless to say, all the signs point towards an easy away win here.
