DC United vs. New York City FC – MLS, April 17, 2021

| April 15, 2021 9:45 am PDT

Hernan Losada’s first competitive match as DC United head coach pits the Black & Red against New York City FC at Audi Field on Saturday, April 17.

Following Ben Olsen’s sacking, DC (0.91 PPG) ended the previous campaign second from the bottom in the Eastern Conference. On the flip side, fifth-place NYCFC (1.70 PPG) finished 18 points ahead – boasting far superior points per game average.

After looking at the odds, I will share my DC United vs. New York City prediction, along with a betting pick for Saturday’s MLS showdown.

DC United vs. New York City FC Odds

DC United to Win3.95
The Draw3.60
New York City FC to Win1.76

The best online sportsbooks haven’t sprung any surprises here. The gulf between DC United (3.95) and New York City (1.76) was vast last season, so it’s no real surprise that Ronny Deila’s team is the bookies’ clear favorite to win this one.

That said, Losada’s DC is somewhat of an unknown quantity. But one thing is certain – the Black & Red will be eager to kick off the new era with a positive result.

DC United vs. NYCFC Match Preview

It is no exaggeration to say that DC United was one of Major League Soccer’s worst teams last season.

Finishing second from bottom in the East and third from bottom in the overall standings, DC struggled throughout the 2020 campaign, with a nine-match winless run – six defeats and three draws – eventually spelling the end of Olsen’s lengthy reign.

The Black & Red managed to string together a three-game winning streak towards the end of the campaign, beating 2020 MLS Cup champs Columbus in the process. But at that stage, a revival was well and truly off the cards.

Losada is one of several new MLS head coaches in 2021, but he has already lost to New York City funnily enough. DC faced NYCFC in a pre-season friendly earlier in the month, suffering a 2-1 defeat.

Having also lost to Philadelphia recently, it could be argued that Losada is struggling to get his message across.

Year Home Team Away Team Result
2020 New York City DC United 4-1
2020 DC United New York City 0-0
2019 DC United New York City 1-2
2019 DC United New York City 0-2
2019 New York City DC United 0-0

As you can see from the table above, Deila’s men are unbeaten in their previous five competitive matches against DC United – recording three wins and two draws along the way.

Better still, NYCFC has netted a combined total of ten goals across the last five meetings with DC and has only conceded on two occasions. Even when the Pigeons have drawn with the Black & Red, they have still managed to keep a clean sheet.

Ranking seventh in the overall standings last season, New York City fell at the first postseason hurdle – losing to Orlando City on penalties. Still, big things are expected of the Boys in Blue this year.

Having bagged six goals and two assists in his final seven regular-seas on appearances last term Valentin Castellanos ended 2020 on a high. If the Argentine forward can pick up where he last off last year, his team will profit.

It is also worth noting that NYCFC (+12) finished with the third-best goal difference in the East last season. On the flip side, DC (–16) ended the previous campaign with the second-worst GD in the division.

DC United vs. NYCFC Betting Pick

  • New York City FC to Win

In all honesty, it is difficult to foresee how DC will fare under Losada. We don’t know how the new coach will set up his team this weekend, and he will probably experiment with his XI.

Based purely on New York City’s impressive H2H record against the Black & Red, I’m backing the away side to claim all three points on Saturday. After all, Deila’s men are heavy favorites.
