DC United vs. New England Revolution Pick – MLS, August 25, 2020

It’s fair to say that DC United and New England Revolution have both endured disappointing starts to 2020. The two teams are languishing towards the lower end of the Eastern Conference after below-par showings at the MLS is Back Tournament, but this matchup provides both sides with a decent opportunity to break into the top half of the standings.

10bet can barely split these teams, although DC United comes into this matchup as the marginal favorite. Both sides have picked up just one win from their opening six games, but the Revs find themselves one point ahead of the DC having claimed four draws.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams.

DC United would have been hoping to hit the ground running when the regular season resumed following a poor group-stage exit at the MLS is Back Tournament. However, Ben Olsen’s men were frustrated by Cincinnati last time out and were eventually held to a goalless draw by Jaap Stam’s well-organized team.

The Black and Red’s sole victory this year came against Inter Miami, days before the campaign was suspended. Two draws and one defeat saw DC fall at the first hurdle in Florida, so it’s difficult to imagine the Washington club having a massive impact on this game.

Meanwhile, New England reached the Round of 16 at the MLS is Back Tournament but failed to make it any further. The Revs were knocked out by Philadelphia Union before securing a draw with the U in their first post-lockdown regular-season outing. It could be argued that Bruce Arena’s men dominated both games against Philly, but they ultimately failed to make the most of their opportunities.

In fact, scoring goals has been the Revs main problem this year. Sure, their defensive record is one of the best in the division. But after scoring just four goals in six games, the team must improve in attack. New signing Adam Buksa has netted twice since joining from Polish side Pogon Szczecin, but his teammates have offered very little support.

Simply put, I can’t see either team winning this game. Goals have been in short supply for both sides, and their lack of attacking threat has cost them in the early stages of the campaign. Both clubs head into this matchup on the back of 0-0 ties, so I think the draw is the way to go here.
