DC United vs. Chicago Fire – MLS, May 13, 2021
The last of the midweek MLS matches take place at Audi Field on Thursday, May 13, as DC United hosts Chicago Fire.
Both sides head into this clash on a three-match losing streak, while both teams have already conceded nine goals in four games this season. Needless to say, this is likely to be a scrappy affair.
In this DC United vs. Chicago Fire betting preview, I discuss the MLS odds, analyze the teams, and share my prediction and pick for Thursday’s match.
DC United vs. Chicago Fire Odds
Having both lost their previous three games, DC United and Chicago Fire head into Thursday’s clash on level terms in the eyes of the top sports betting sites.
With the fellow strugglers stuck at the bottom end of the Eastern Conference, the generous price for the draw is bound to attract plenty of attention here.
Let’s take a closer look at the teams before making a DC United vs. Chicago Fire prediction.
DC United Team News and Analysis
DC kicked off the Hernan Losada era in style, claiming a shock victory over New York City. But since then, it’s been all downhill for the Washington club.
Due to an unfortunate Brendan Hines-Ike’s own goal, the Black-and-Red recorded a narrow 1-0 loss to New England in Week 2. However, there was nothing narrow about DC’s previous two defeats.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession against the Earthquakes, Losada’s men were thrashed 4-1 in San Jose. They even managed to register 18 shots, yet they could not deal with the Quakes’ forward line.
Once again, DC saw more of the ball than Columbus last weekend. But the Crew ended up recording an easy 3-1 win on home soil – limiting the Black-and-Red to just two attempts on target.
Following the departure of long-standing head coach Ben Olsen, it was always going to be difficult for DC to change their fortunes. If the team’s early-season performances are anything to go by, Losada has a lot of work to do.
Assessing Chicago’s Recent Form
Thankfully for DC, Chicago has also made a dreadful start to the 2021 MLS campaign.
After throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with New England in Week 1, Raphael Wickey’s men were crushed 3-1 by Atlanta United. They have since suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats, losing to the Red Bulls and the Union.
Strangely, Wicky’s men have enjoyed more possession than three of their four opponents this season. But they have ultimately failed to make the most of their dominance (if you can even call it that).
Having only netted three goals, the Illinois strugglers are currently the second-lowest scorers in the Eastern Conference. Worse still, only bottom-club FC Cincinnati has conceded more goals.
Sitting on one point and a goal difference of –1, Chicago looks set for another difficult year.
DC United vs. Chicago Fire Betting Pick
Having considered everything, the draw is my DC United vs. Chicago Fire pick – simply because I can’t make a case for either of the teams winning on Thursday.
Eleventh-place Chicago finished just two points ahead of thirteenth-place DC in the 2020 Eastern Conference standings. That tells you everything you need to know about the similarities between the two clubs.
