Daniil Medvedev vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas – Semifinals, 2021 Australian Open

The Australian Open 2021 has brought us plenty of surprising moments up to this point and Stefanos Tsitsipas is personally responsible for one of the most shocking among them.
The Greek prodigy was 2-0 down against Rafa Nadal and looked doomed. That’s when Tsitsipas found the mental strength to turn it around and eliminate his famous opponent.
He will now face Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, another monumental challenge. Both men will be eager to win their first Grand Slam and I expect an epic encounter.
I share my thoughts on both sides in this Daniil Medvedev vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas betting preview. The post includes the latest odds, my prediction, and a betting pick for the match.
Medvedev vs. Tsitsipas Odds
The Daniil Medvedev vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas odds offered by the best betting sites online suggest that the Russian is the favorite in this one. Let’s not forget that Nadal entered his match against Tsitsipas in a similar position, though.
Medvedev vs. Tsitsipas Head-to-Head Results
Before we explore the performance of both players so far in the 2021 Australian Open, let’s check the head-to-head history between the two.
Medvedev wins | Surface | Tsitsipas wins |
1 | Hard (indoor) | 1 |
3 | Hard (outdoor) | 0 |
1 | Clay | 0 |
0 | Grass | 0 |
5 | Total | 1 |
It’s clear that Medvedev has a huge advantage in this rivalry. He holds a 5-1 record that includes three victories on hard courts outdoors.
There are some bright spots for Tsitsipas, though. The Greek youngster won their last clash in the Nitto ATP Finals 2019 and he took a set in every single encounter bar one. Even the only clean victory in favor of Medvedev came with a 7-6 7-5 score, so it was hardly an easy one.
Daniil Medvedev Analysis
I’m not surprised by the fact that Daniil Medvedev is the favorite of the best tennis betting apps and sites. The Russian won four of his five Australian Open 2021 matches so far without losing a set, including the clash against his countryman Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.
Never easy to play friend and countryman. ?? Nothing but respect. @AndreyRublev97. On to the next match! @AustralianOpen ??? pic.twitter.com/9C2ShhuLxp

The only man who put Medvedev under pressure up to this point was Filip Krajinovic, but the favorite punished him by winning the deciding set in that encounter by 6-0.
Outside of that match, Medvedev has been phenomenal and very close to his best. He’s been aggressive without going too far, while his defense has been great too. You need to work hard for every single point against the Russian and that’s the sign of great champions.
Stefanos Tsitsipas Analysis
I must admit that I expected to see Rafa Nadal in the semis, especially since the Spaniard went 2-0 up against Tsitsipas in their clash. It’s possible that the Greek player needed some time to find his rhythm after the walkover in the previous round.
I’m not sure what happened exactly, but the performance from the third set on against Nadal was something else. Just check out the highlights if you don’t believe me.
If Tsitsipas can perform on the same level against Medvedev, he certainly can book a place in the Australian Open 2021 final. At the same time, the Greek youngster doesn’t have a lot of experience on such a level and that could be a problem.
Medvedev vs. Tsitsipas Pick
The logical betting pick for this match would be to back Medvedev, based on the head-to-head record and the overall performance in the tournament. And yet, these are the reasons why the odds for the Russian are so low.
At the same time, Tsitsipas just earned one of the greatest victories in his career. That should boost his confidence, so I don’t think he will go down without a fight.
My prediction is that this match will be very tight, just like all encounters between the duo so far. I won’t be shocked if we see five sets even, so I’m going for the over this time around.
