Dallas Mavericks vs. Philadelphia 76ers Betting Analysis – February 25, 2021

The Mavericks travel to Philadelphia to meet the 76ers, and the stakes couldn’t be much higher. A win for Dallas closes the growing gap between themselves and the eighth-placed Warriors. They are running out of time to make a bid for the playoffs, and every game seems like it’s a must-win one right now. At the other end of the spectrum, the 76ers are trying to fend off the Nets and maintain their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference. Having been on top of the pile for so long, it would be criminal for them to drop down now when they are so close to finishing first. This would be the first time they have topped the standings at the end of the regular season for 20 years.

Dallas has an outstanding recent record against Philadelphia, having won the previous four games against them. This includes winning the last two games played at the Wells Fargo Center.

Over the previous ten head-to-head meetings, they have both averaged exactly 53 first-half points each. However, the Mavericks have an overall better points average as they have averaged five more points per game than the 76ers.

Here is my Mavericks vs. 76ers betting preview.

Mavericks vs. 76ers Match Odds

Mavericks +5-110
76ers -5-110
Mavericks To Win+160
76ers To Win-195
Over 224.5-110
Under 224.5-110

You would have to say that the spread looks about right for this matchup. The last time that the Mavericks had a similar handicap lead to this against the 76ers was in 2019, and they went on to win that game straight up. The points total looks to be on the bigger side, and I expected it to be closer to 220.

Mavericks Preview

The Mavericks have saved their best basketball for the end of the season as they have only lost two of their previous nine games. Those nine games had been very high scoring up until their most recent two, when the scoring seemed to have stopped.

Dallas has a split record on the road this season of seven wins and seven defeats from their 14 matches. They had alternated back-to-back losses with back-to-back wins over the previous six games before they met the Hawks last time out. They went on to win that game, and if the trend continues tonight, they will be back in the win column again. The victory over the Hawks ended a run of six straight defeats against them.

Here are the latest betting trends for Dallas:

Against The Spread
  • Dallas is 4-11 in their previous 15 matches.
  • They have beaten the 76ers on the last five occasions they have met.
  • The Mavericks have won seven of their previous ten games on the road.

The most significant piece of information here is how well they have done against the 76ers recently.

Points Total
  • Seven of their last nine games have gone over the betting total.
  • Only one of their previous five trips to Philadelphia has failed to go under the points total.
  • The points total has gone under in four of their last five games against teams from the Atlantic Division.

There isn’t a great deal to go on here.

Other Pointers
  • The Mavericks hold an impressive 14-5 record against the 76ers in their previous 19 games against them.
  • They have won four of their last five matches against teams from the East Coast.

This proves how much they have enjoyed playing against Philadelphia over the years.

The Mavericks have an average-looking offense with a reasonably good field goal percentage but have been let down badly by their rebounding.

They have played more of a dribbling game rather than a passing one recently. This has lowered their assists count but has meant that they haven’t made many turnovers.

Their defense hasn’t been the best, and they have conceded 113 points per game on average. However, they have defended slightly better on the road this season for one reason or another.

They need to work that bit harder, in my opinion, and make more steals than they currently are making. This is especially important when you’re not rebounding well, as combining the two means that they won’t see as much of the ball as they would have liked.

Many journalists are billing this game as the Doncic versus Embiid game, and why wouldn’t they when you look at how impressive both players have been this season. The Slovenian was in great form against the Celtics last time out as he scored 31 points, shot six from eight three-pointers, made ten rebounds, and eight assists. Here are some of the highlights from that performance.

The Mavericks have two players questionable to play tonight, and they are Porzingis and Kleber, who are both struggling with injuries.

76ers Preview

The 76ers are going through their worst run of the season, having lost four of their previous seven games. However, perhaps they are coming out of this lousy patch as they have won three of their last four games. It must be said that all four defeats did come against teams situated in playoffs spots, so they didn’t lose any easy games.

They have the best home record in the Eastern Conference, having won 13 of their 15 matches this season. Since losing to the Trail Blazers, they have gone on to win their last three home fixtures in a row. The 76ers didn’t play too badly in that game, and they only lost one-quarter of the match. However, that third quarter was a disaster as they lost it by 21 points.

Here are the latest betting trends for Philadelphia:

Against The Spread
  • They have only won two of their previous seven games.
  • The 76ers have enjoyed playing at home on a Thursday night as they have won six of their last seven games.

The above confirms that they have struggled lately and that despite their struggles, the bookmakers haven’t made life any easier for them.

Points Total
  • Five of their last six games against teams based in the Western Conference have gone over the betting total.

There isn’t a great deal to go on here.

Other Pointers
  • The 76ers have won two-thirds of their previous 18 games.
  • They have only lost one of their last nine home matches.
  • Philadelphia is 4-1 in their previous five games against teams from the Southwest Division.

This shows that despite a small blip, the Mavericks have a mammoth task on their hands tonight.

The 76ers have a good, well-rounded offense that has rebounded very well at times this season. This is precisely what the Mavericks did not want to hear.

Their attack has been more potent at home, and they have averaged four more points per game.

One thing that worries me is they do get complacent, which can often lead to many turnovers. The Mavericks like to hold on to the ball, so the 76ers won’t want to give it up easily tonight.

However, Philadelphia does work hard to win the ball back, and they currently have the third-highest steals average per game in the league.

Philadelphia’s defense is ranked tenth in the league, just as their offense is, making them one of the best well-rounded teams in the NBA this season. Again, their rebounding has been one of the critical factors in helping them defend so well. As well as this, they are also blocking well, which makes life difficult for their opponents.

Big games need big players, and they don’t come much bigger than Joel Embiid this season. However, unlike Doncic, he comes into this game on the back of his worst shooting performance of the season against the Raptors. He only made three field goals all night, which will be a concern for the 76ers.

The 76ers only have one injury concern to deal with, but Curry is hopeful he will return tonight following his recent ankle problem.

Mavericks vs. 76ers Betting Pick

  • Over 224.5 Points

This is an intriguing matchup up and extremely difficult to call. You have the Mavericks, who are playing their best basketball of the season and is one of a select few who has enjoyed playing against Philadelphia. Then you have the 76ers, who have been strong all season, who led the Eastern Conference and have a formidable home record. For those reasons, I will sit on the fence and not call a winner in this one. However, I am going to go against my initial thoughts and pick over the points total. I believe this will be a close game, and both teams could spur each other on to produce a high-scoring, entertaining game.
