Predictions and Picks for the Cycling Time Trials at the Tokyo Olympics
The Olympic cycling road races were breathtaking, and I don’t think anyone predicted the eventual winners. Richard Carapaz and Anna Kiesenhofer stunned the Olympics cycling favorites to collect the gold medals.
I’m sure that the top road riders will be eager to come back stronger in the next races. I explore the latest odds and share my top picks in this Tokyo Olympics cycling time trial betting preview.
I cover both the men’s and the women’s events.
Tokyo Olympic Cycling Time Trial Odds
The latest Tokyo time trial betting odds are already up, and we can see some familiar names on the top of the list.
Here’s what the best sportsbooks online offer for the men’s time trial race.
- Wout Van Aert: +150
- Filippo Ganna: +300
- Rohan Denis: +450
- Remco Evenpoel: +650
- Primoz Roglic: +1100
- Tom Dumoulin: +1600
- Brandon McNulty: +1800
We have a clear favorite here in Wout Van Aert and few somewhat realistic contenders. Everyone else is considered an underdog, but that’s exactly what people thought about Carapaz, who won the mass start.
Here’s what the odds tell us about the women’s event.
- Chloe Dygert: +100
- Anna Van Der Breggen: +110
- Annemiek Van Vleuten: +450
- Rest of the Field: +800
The bookies believe there are two potential winners, one dark horse, and every other scenario is very unlikely. Many sportsbooks offer the “rest of the field” option you see above, and it might be worth a shot.
The prices for any other rider that’s not listed above start from +2500, at least. With that in mind, let’s move on to my predictions.
Predictions for the Olympic Cycling Time Trials
Can unexpected riders shock the world once again in the time trial event? I think that the Olympic cycling favorites should be able to perform better this time around.
Here’s what I expect for both races.
Prediction for the Men’s Time Trial
I picked Wout Van Aert to win the men’s road race, and the Belgian wasn’t far from the truth. He beat his main rival Tadej Pogacar with a strong finish, but the eventual gold medalist had a large lead up to this point, and Van Aert finished second.
He is arguably the best-time trialist right now and deserves to be the favorite here. But how much did his effort in the previous race cost in terms of energy? Let’s not forget that the Belgian youngster had a strong performance in the Tour de France as well.
I still think Van Aert should win this one, but I wouldn’t back him at the current odds. We saw clearly that athletes who prepared solely for the Olympics could be very dangerous, so that’s a hard pass unless I can get +200 or better.
Prediction for the Women’s Time Trial
I still can’t believe the fact that Anna Kiesenhofer won the gold in the road race. The Austrian dominated the competition from very early on, and the main favorites from the Dutch team only won a silver thanks to Annemiek Van Vleuten.
Both her and Anna Van Der Breggen pushed really hard, so I don’t think they will be at their best in the time trial. I can’t say the same for Chloe Dygert, who took it easy towards the end of the competition and should have a lot left in the tank for the next race.
The time trial specialist is the main favorite here, and my Tokyo 2020 cycling time trial prediction is that the American is going to win the gold medal.
I’m on the fence in terms of betting, though. The odds are just about right, so backing her at +100 is somewhat pointless. Gambling on her might be worth it if you can find a better price.
Sleeper Picks for the Olympics Cycling Time Trial
The mass starts clearly showed that you should always look for underdogs that might be ready to upset the odds at the Olympics. Many athletes target other competitions earlier in the year, and they are not at their best at the games, which opens the door to upsets.
That’s why I have selected two sleeper picks for the upcoming time trials. I like Brandon McNulty’s chances in the men’s event, and the price of +1800 is more than enough to back him.
The American has been an expert in time trials since the early days of his career, so this should be his stronger discipline. If you consider McNulty’s sixth position in the mass start, it looks like he’s close to his best form when it matters the most.
Another athlete with a solid road race performance is my sleeper pick for the women’s race. The experienced Elisa Longo Borghini looked great in the flat stretches and won a bronze medal.
She can be a challenge in the time trial, and the price of +6500 you can find in most places is just absurd.
- Sleeper Pick 1 – Brandon McNulty: +1800
- Sleeper Pick 2 – Elisa Longo Borghini: +6500
