Costa Rica vs. USA – FIFA World Cup Qualifying, Wednesday, March 30, 2022

| March 29, 2022 6:33 am PDT

Costa Rica welcomes the USMNT to San Jose on Wednesday, March 30. With only one game remaining in the World Cup qualifying campaign, both sides are guaranteed a top-four finish in the CONCACAF group.

The Costa Ricans find themselves fourth in the standings, three points behind the United States and Mexico. Due to their inferior goal difference, they look set to finish in the playoff spot – meaning the US will almost certainly join Canada at Qatar 2022.

This is the last chance to bet on the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. If you want to wager on Wednesday’s clash, make sure you check out my Costa Rica vs. USA prediction and pick.

Costa Rica vs. USA Betting Odds

Costa Rica to Win3.60
The Draw2.90
USA to Win2.10

Priced at 3.60, Costa Rica heads into this clash as the bookmakers’ outsider. That said, the USA’s odds of 2.10 are by no means small. This suggests that Wednesday’s showdown could be a close-fought battle.

At first glance, the price of 2.90 for the draw stands out here. Let’s not forget that Costa Rica pushed the US all the way in the reverse fixture back in October, with the Yanks claiming a narrow 2-1 victory in Columbus.

I found these generous odds at Betway. Be sure to head over to Betway’s sportsbook if you like the look of these prices.

Costa Rica vs. USA Head-to-Head

  • Costa Rica Wins: 16
  • Draws: 5
  • USA Wins: 19

The overall head-to-head record in this fixture is relatively even. Since 1975, the USMNT has won 19 of the 40 meetings between the teams – with Costa Rica picking up 16 victories along the way.

However, it is worth noting that Gregg Berhalter’s boys have dominated this fixture in recent years. They have won each of the previous four encounters across all competitions, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Costa Rica Team News and Analysis

If it weren’t for a slow start to World Cup qualification, the Costa Ricans would find themselves in a much better position right now. Unfortunately, though, they kicked off their campaign with a four-game winless run.

Los Ticos have turned things around since then, losing just two of their past 11 qualifiers. Better still, they head into Wednesday’s clash on a six-game unbeaten streak – having picked up five wins and a draw against Mexico.

On Sunday, Costa Rica secured a top-four spot with a 2-1 victory over El Salvador. Anthony Contreras opened the scoring before ex-Arsenal forward Joel Campbell capped off the win.

As a result, Luis Fernando Suarez’s men have won each of their last three qualifiers. They even managed to snap Canada’s unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory against the Maple Leafs last week.

Although the Yanks sit three points ahead of Costa Rica, Los Ticos are no pushovers. After keeping four clean sheets in their previous five outings, they will fancy their chances of getting something from Wednesday’s match.

USA Team News and Analysis

Last weekend, the Stars and Stripes all but punched their ticket to Qatar 2022 with a dominant 5-1 win over Panama. Chelsea star Christian Pulisic netted a hat-trick, while Paul Arriola and Jesus Ferreira completed the rout.

Berhalter’s boys have lost just two of their 13 qualifiers, picking up seven wins and four draws in the process. Funnily enough, Mexico has an identical record.

When you look at the bigger picture,
the Yanks have suffered only two defeats in their previous 23 games across all competitions. That run includes last year’s Nations League and Gold Cup triumphs.

That said, the USMNT has not been firing on all cylinders of late. In the last six months, they have suffered a defeat to Canada – as well as draws against Jamaica and Mexico. Still, they will be confident of getting the better of Costa Rica.

Alongside Pulisic, the Bundesliga trio of Giovanni Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Ricardo Pepi (Augsburg), and Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig) looks set to cause Los Ticos plenty of problems.

Prediction for Costa Rica vs. USA

The Stars and Stripes know that a draw will be enough for them to qualify for the World Cup. On the flip side, the Costa Ricans must win to give themselves any chance of securing automatic qualification.

For that reason, I can see Costa Rica getting something from this game. I’m not saying that Los Ticos will claim all three points, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they snatched a draw.

Having taken everything into consideration, the draw is my Costa Rica vs. USA prediction. Berhalter’s boys will be eager to finish their WCQ campaign on a high note, but Costa Rica will have other ideas.

My Costa Rica vs. USA Pick

  • The Draw

Los Ticos have won five of their previous six games and even managed to hold Mexico to a draw earlier this year. With that in mind, they should be able to prevent the USMNT from running away with all three points on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Panama hosts Canada in the final round of qualifying. If you’re planning to wager on that game, too, be sure to check out my Panama vs. Canada prediction and pick.
