Corinthians vs. Atletico Mineiro – Brazilian Serie A, November 14, 2020

Corinthians will be hoping to extend their unbeaten streak to four games when Atletico Mineiro visits Neo Quimica Arena on Saturday, November 14.

However, fresh from thrashing Flamengo 4-0 last weekend, Jorge Sampaoli’s men will be brimming with confidence and could go top of the table with a win on Matchday 21.

With a ten-point lead and a game in hand over Corinthians (3.50), Atletico Mineiro (1.95) is the bookies’ favorite to win this one. But the high odds for the away victory suggest that Sampaoli’s side won’t have it all their own way on Saturday.

Following a poor start to the season, Corinthians seem to be establishing a rhythm. Vager Mancini’s men lost five of their opening 11 games, yet they have only suffered two defeats in their previous nine outings.

Three straight draws at the beginning of October stopped the rot, before a run of three wins in four games saw the Sao Paulo outfit start to climb up the table.

Timao is still tenth in the standings, but having beaten first-place Internacional on Matchday 19, the team is obviously heading in the right direction. Last time out, a draw with Atletico Goianiense saw Corinthains extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for Corinthians, but Mancini’s men must improve defensively. Indeed, only three teams in the division have conceded more goals than Timao.

Unfortunately for Corinthians, Atletico Mineiro is the highest scorer in Brazil’s top flight this season. Sampaoli’s men have netted 35 goals in 19 league games, and their attacking approach has enabled them to cement second place in the table.

New signing Keno has been the star of the show this term, racking up nine goals and two assists in Serie A. Jefferson Savarino (three goals, five assists) and Nathan (three goals, one assist) have also played eye-catching supporting roles so far.

After winning ten of their opening 14 matches, Mineiro has only managed to claim one victory in their previous five outings. Having said that, the Belo Horizonte outfit has suffered just three defeats in their last 11 games.

Just when it looked as though Mineiro was starting to slide down the standings, Sampaoli’s men crushed Flamengo 4-0. The White and Blacks completely humiliated the reigning champions last weekend, so I can see them carrying their momentum into Matchday 21.

Given that Mineiro has been one of the best teams in Brazil this season, odds of 1.95 for the away win seem very generous to me. Yes, Corinthians have upped their game in recent weeks. But Mineiro should be far too strong for Timao.

Sampaoli’s men are the top scorers in Serie A, while Corinthians possess one of the poorest defensive records in the division. All the signs are pointing towards a high-scoring away win on Saturday.
