The Corales Puntacana Championship has been on the PGA Tour since 2018. Puntacana Resort and Club will host the tournament as golfers aim for a victory.

This might be an alternative event, but every golfer wants to win. Let’s see which golfers I’m watching in the 2022 Corales Puntacana Championship.

Graeme McDowell has been boom or bust on the PGA Tour this season. He has a pair of top 15 finishes but has also missed the cut six times. It’s hard to say which one we’ll see because we’ve seen both in the last month.

Coincidentally, we’ve seen the same from McDowell in the Corales Puntacana Championship. He has two missed cuts in four starts, but check out his other finishes.

In 2019, McDowell was seven shots back after shooting a one-over 73 in the first round. However, he quickly bounced back with back-to-back 64’s. A final round 69 earned McDowell his first victory in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Last year, McDowell was in contention for another victory. He finished fourth, two shots behind winner Joel Dahmen.

The big difference between 2019 and 2021 was his low scores. We talked about his two 64’s in the 2019 tournament. McDowell’s lowest round in the 2021 tournament was a 69. He’ll have to change that if he wants another win.

Can McDowell earn his second victory in this tournament?

Hudson Swafford has hit a rough patch. Swafford has missed the cut in four of his last five starts, with his other finish being outside the top 55. Interestingly, this stretch came on the heels of his third career PGA Tour victory.

Swafford’s victory in The American Express is his only top 30 finish in 14 starts this season. His success in the Corales Puntacana Championship suggests that stat is about to change.

He missed the cut in his first start, but check out his last two finishes.

Swafford was 12-under going into the weekend in the 2018 tournament. A pair of 69s were enough to hold off a hard-charging Tyler McCumber to earn his second career PGA Tour victory.

Last year was a different story, as Swafford was three-under heading to the weekend. He failed to mount a charge, finishing three shots back.

I know Swafford has been struggling lately, but we can’t ignore his success in this tournament. I expect him to break out of the slump with a great performance.

Joel Dahmen has produced solid results this season. He has a pair of top 10 finishes, including a season-best fifth-place finish in the Houston Open. Dahmen has done a great job avoiding the bad finishes, making the cut in 11 of his 13 starts.

This week, Dahmen heads to a course that has brought him much success. He finished just outside the top 10 in his first two starts. The primary reason for that was combining for four rounds of 71 or worse.

Dahmen didn’t play in the 2020 tournament, but check out his numbers in 2021.

A five-under, 67 in the first round gave Dahmen the early lead. Another great score in the third round put him in a great spot. Dahmen held off a final-round charge by Sam Ryder to score his first career PGA Tour victory.

Because of that, Dahmen enters the 2022 Corales Puntacana Championship as the odds-on favorite. Can he make it back-to-back wins?

Brice Garnett has had a tough 2021-22 season. The 38-year-old has missed the cut in half his starts and hasn’t been in contention much. However, he did score a seventh-place finish in the Puerto Rico Open. Garnett was in contention early in THE PLAYERS Championship but faded after the first round.

In 2018, Garnett came to the Corales Puntacana Championship with six straight finishes of 30th or worse. Then, he went out and did this.

Garnett went low in the first round, shooting a nine-under, 63. He never slowed up as he built up a big lead heading into the final round. A two-under 70 was more than enough to earn Garnett his first career PGA Tour victory.

He wasn’t in contention in 2019 and 2020, but he looked strong last year. Garnett shot a final round 68, but three rounds in the 70s prevented him from finishing top-five.

Can Garnett end his rough stretch in the Corales Puntacana Championship?

Joel Dahmen is the favorite, and his past success looks appealing, but I like Graeme McDowell to win his second career Corales Puntacana Championship. McDowell has a pair of top-five finishes in this tournament, including last year. There’s no reason to believe he can’t continue that success.
