Columbus Crew vs. Toronto FC – MLS, May 29, 2021

| May 28, 2021 5:57 am PDT

Columbus and Toronto will both be hoping to improve on a below-par start to the 2021 MLS season when they go head-to-head in Ohio this Saturday, May 29.

The Crew find themselves eighth in the Eastern Conference, having registered two wins, two draws, and two losses this year.

Meanwhile, the Reds have only managed to win one of their opening six matches. With two draws and three defeats to their name, they sit third from bottom in the standings – three points behind Columbus.

In this Columbus Crew vs. Toronto FC betting preview, I discuss the odds and analyze the teams before sharing my prediction and pick for Saturday’s showdown.

Columbus Crew vs. Toronto FC Odds

Columbus Crew to Win2.10
The Draw3.45
Toronto FC to Win3.25

Following an impressive victory over New York City, Columbus (2.10) is the bookies’ favorite to win this one. Despite playing just two home games this term, Caleb Porter’s men have claimed four points at Historic Crew Stadium.

Funnily enough, TFC has already beaten the Crew this season. The Reds clinched a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture, although they have managed to take just one point from a possible six since then.

Columbus Team News and Analysis

It’s fair to say that Porter’s men have made a relatively uninspiring start to their title-defending campaign.

Having won the MLS Cup last year, Columbus was expected to hit the ground running in 2021.

However, the reigning champions only managed to win one of their opening five matches.

The Crew kicked off the season with two straight goalless draws before beating DC United 3-1. But back-to-back losses against Toronto and New England swiftly put an end to the team’s unbeaten start.

Although Porter’s men came from behind to beat NYFCF last weekend, it still feels like they are finding their feet at the moment.

Lucas Zelarayan was the star of the show last time out, netting not one but two sublime free-kicks to win this match for his side. The Argentine playmaker has four goals and two assists under his belt this year, having previously shone in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Assessing Toronto’s Recent Form

Thankfully for Columbus, Toronto’s form during the early stages of the 2021 MLS season has been even worse.

The Reds took just a single point from their opening three games, losing to Montreal and RBNY along the way. They managed to claim their first win of the year in Week 4, but they have since recorded one draw and one defeat.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a major issue for TFC. In fact, only a handful of teams in the East have netted more goals than the Canadians. But it goes without saying that Toronto must improve at the other end of the pitch.

Indeed, just two sides – Cincinnati and DC United – have conceded more goals than Chris Armas’ men this term.

The Reds gave a decent account of themselves last weekend, racking up 19 shots against Orlando. But if they continue to waste their opportunities, they won’t move up the standings.

My Crew vs. Toronto Betting Pick

  • Columbus Crew to Win

All the top online sportsbooks view Columbus as the favorite to win this match – and I totally agree.

While Columbus appears to be growing into the season, TFC isn’t showing any signs of improvement. Yes, the Reds beat the Crew not so long ago. But Porter’s men have upped their game since then.

Given that you can more than double your money by backing the defending champs here, the home win is my Columbus Crew vs. Toronto FC prediction.
