Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls – MLS, September 14, 2021

| September 13, 2021 10:09 am PDT

With three games in hand over Columbus (7-6-11), the Red Bulls (6-5-10) will be looking to close the gap on the Crew when they visit Ohio on Tuesday, September 14.

Tenth-place Columbus currently leads eleventh-place RBNY by four points in the Eastern Conference, with both sides set to miss out on a playoff berth as things stand.

Remarkably, the reigning MLS Cup champions have lost eight of their previous nine games. The Red Bulls aren’t exactly outshining the Crew, though, having won just one of their last ten matches (4 draws, 5 losses).

After analyzing the teams and discussing the MLS odds for Tuesday’s clash, I will provide my Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls prediction and betting pick.

Can the Crew Turn Things Around?

This is just getting ridiculous now, isn’t it?

Following six straight defeats, Columbus appeared to have turned the corner when they beat FC Cincinnati a fortnight ago. However, they have since suffered a further two losses – falling to Orlando City and Inter Miami in the space of a week.

It is difficult to think of another defending MLS Cup champion that has fallen off the rails in this manner. In fact, I’m pretty sure the Crew’s has broken some kind of unwanted record with their run of eight losses in nine matches.

It goes without saying that Caleb Porter’s men are in desperate need of a spark. Granted, Lucas Zelarayan (8 goals, 4 assists) has remained a constant threat throughout the campaign. But guys like Gyasi Zardes, Pedro Santos, and BWP need to step up.

I guess the Crew can take confidence from the fact that they have scored six goals across their past four outings. Still, they don’t have many reasons to be optimistic, that’s for sure.

Will RBNY Heap More Misery on Columbus?

I think the Red Bulls can count themselves pretty unfortunate to have drawn with DC United on Saturday. They registered ten shots – three of which were on target – but ultimately failed to build on Dru Yearwood’s fifth-minute goal.

A 1-1 draw with in-form DC is a good result, though, especially when you consider RBNY’s recent struggles. Gerhard Struber’s men will now be confident of overcoming off-form Columbus.

Although the Red Bulls have only managed to win one of their previous ten matches, they have picked up four draws in the process. It is also worth noting that Struber’s men have remained within a single goal of each of their opponents during that period.

Across the past ten games, the Red Bulls have only conceded 12 goals. By contrast, Columbus has conceded 21 goals in the same timeframe. These statistics are definitely worth taking into account when it comes to placing your Columbus vs. RBNY bets.

Crew vs. Red Bulls – Odds, Prediction, and Pick

Columbus Crew to Win2.25
The Draw3.30
New York Red Bulls to Win3.30
Both Teams to Score1.78
Over 2.5 Goals1.91
Under 2.5 Goals1.80

The top-rated MLS betting sites view Columbus as the favorite to win this one, leaving RBNY as the outsider. I’m not overly surprised by these odds, however, as the Crew has the home-field advantage.

That said, it is extremely difficult to pick a winner here. Both teams are enduring a below-par season, so neither side heads into this game as the clear frontrunner.

With that in mind, I recommend steering clear of the regular moneyline markets. Although the Red Bulls have enjoyed more positive results than Columbus of late, predicting the result of this match is a tricky task.

Having taken everything into consideration, the under 2.5 goals wager feels like the best bet for Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls. RBNY claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Columbus in the previous meeting – and I expect a similar outcome this time around.

Seven of the Red Bulls’ previous ten games have produced less than three goals, meaning Tuesday’s clash is likely to be a low-scoring encounter.
