Columbus Crew vs. New York City – MLS, October 18, 2020
Columbus will be desperate to end a two-game losing streak when New York City visits Ohio on Sunday, October 18. The Crew suffered a shock defeat to local rival FC Cincinnati on Wednesday, although the Boys in Blue also failed to pick up a win in either of their previous two outings.
Sixth-place NYC currently sits four points behind third-place Columbus in the Eastern Conference. However, Caleb Porter’s men have a game in hand over their upcoming opponent.
This is destined to be an intriguing battle. Read on to see my Columbus Crew vs. New York City prediction and betting pick.
Columbus Crew vs. New York City Odds
Despite Columbus’ recent slump, 10bet still views the Black & Gold as the favorite to win this one. But the high price for the home win (2.20) indicates that New York City (3.00) won’t hand the Crew an easy victory.
NYC may be four points behind Columbus in the standings, but let’s not forget that Ronny Deila’s side has only lost two of their last 12 games.
Columbus Crew vs. New York City Preview
Not so long ago, Columbus was flying high at the top of the Eastern Conference. A six-game unbeaten streak saw Porter’s side take control of the division, but the Crew now heads into this clash on a four-game winless run.
Columbus’ blip started with a 3-1 loss to Toronto FC last month, with a draw against FC Dallas coming shortly after. The Crew’s 100% home record was then ended by a 2-1 defeat to Montreal Impact last week, before FC Cincinnati beat Columbus by the same scoreline on Wednesday.
Considering that Cincinnati had lost four straight games leading up to the Hell is Real Derby, Porter will be hugely disappointed with his side’s performance last time out. Losing to your local rival is never fun, but losing to a team as poor as Cincinnati will hurt the Crew.
It goes without saying that Columbus will be eager to returning to winning ways this weekend. However, that could be difficult against New York City.
The Boys in Blue put together a devastating three-game winning streak across late September and early October. Deila’s men scored a combined total of 11 goals in victories over Cincinnati, Inter Miami, and DC United and cemented a place in the top six in the process.
Despite dominating New England Revolution last weekend, NYC’s winning streak was ended with a 2-1 defeat. But the Bronx outfit showed great spirit to secure a draw against Orlando City on Wednesday. In fact, the team will probably be slightly disappointed not to have come away from Florida with all three points.
NYC was miles behind Columbus earlier in the campaign, but the gap has been shortening in recent weeks. This is bound to be a tense affair.
Columbus Crew vs. New York City Betting Pick
Columbus will be anxious to end their barren spell this weekend, but that won’t be straightforward. New York City has been one of the Eastern Conference’s in-form teams of late, so the Crew could struggle to claim maximum points on Sunday.
Having taken everything into consideration, I believe the draw is the way to go here. With two of the strongest sides in the division going head-to-head, I can see the points being shared.
