Columbus Crew vs. New England Revolution – MLS, December 6, 2020
Columbus welcomes New England to Ohio on Sunday, December 6, for the MLS Eastern Conference final.
The Revs secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Orlando in the previous round, before the Crew snatched an extra-time win against Nashville. Both sides are now just one match away from the 2020 MLS Cup final.
This is destined to be a thriller. If you’re interested in wagering on Sunday’s clash, make sure you check out my Columbus Crew vs. New England Revolution prediction and betting pick below.
Columbus Crew vs. New England Revolution Odds
Columbus (1.80) finished nine points ahead of New England (4.33) in the regular-season standings, so I’m not surprised that the leading online sportsbooks are favoring the Crew here.
It is also worth mentioning that Columbus has beaten New England in each of their previous three meetings, with Caleb Porter’s side keeping a clean sheet on every occasion.
Columbus Crew vs. New England Revolution Preview
Last weekend, Columbus became the latest team to be pushed to their limits by Nashville. Gary Smith’s men managed to hold the Crew to a goalless draw after 90 minutes, but two extra-time strikes eventually saw the Ohio outfit advance from the semi-finals.
Unsurprisingly, it was Pedro Santos and Gyasi Zardes who came to the rescue for Columbus. The two forwards have been a constant threat throughout 2020, and they were on hand once again to send their side through to the last four.
Only Golden Boot winner Diego Rossi netted more regular-season goals than Zardes, while Santos now has a hugely impressive tally of eight goals and seven assists to his name this year.
Despite their attacking efforts, I’m sure that Porter will be very pleased that his side managed to keep a clean sheet last time out. The Crew’s defensive record is one of the best in the league this term, yet the team hadn’t achieved a shutout in 12 games leading up to Sunday’s showdown.
With a clean-sheet victory behind them, Columbus will surely be confident beating New England.
The Revs almost didn’t make it into the playoffs this year. They were forced to get past Montreal in a play-in match before getting the opportunity to face top-seed Philadelphia. But after edging the Impact 2-1, New England stunned everyone by knocking out the newly-crowned Supporters’ Shield champions.
Goals from Adam Buksa and Tajon Buchanan saw Bruce Arena’s men demolish the Union and set up a semi-final clash with Orlando.
Once again, the Revs were the underdogs in the previous round, but that didn’t seem to bother them. A Carles Gil penalty gave New England the lead over the Lions, with a Gustavo Bou brace capping off a deserved 3-1 win for Arena’s side.
New England has struggled for goals for much of 2020, yet the team has been scoring for fun of late. The question is – can Bou and co. maintain their recent record and penetrate the Crew’s solid backline?
Crew vs. Revolution Prediction and Betting Pick
I’m expecting this to be a tight and tense affair between two defensively-minded teams. Both sides have proved that they can score goals in recent matches, but I don’t see this being a high-scoring encounter.
The odds gap is a lot bigger than I was expecting here, making the price for the draw very attractive. Columbus may be the favorite, but I’m backing New England to hold out and snatch a draw after 90 minutes.
