Columbus Crew vs. FC Cincinnati Pick – MLS, September 6, 2020
Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati meet on Sunday, September 6, for the second Hell is Real Derby in the space of a week. The Ohio clubs produced a relatively dull goalless draw last time, so let’s hope the upcoming clash dishes up a bit more action.
The Crew currently leads the way in the Eastern Conference, with the Orange and Blue down in eleventh place. Can Cincinnati close the gap on the league leader? You can find my Columbus Crew vs. FC Cincinnati prediction and betting pick below.
Columbus Crew vs. FC Cincinnati Odds
Columbus leads Cincinnati by 11 points, although I’m not entirely sure the standings tell the whole story. Both sides have won one of their four games since the regular season got back underway, but Cincinnati has also secured three impressive draws during that period.
The top-rated online soccer betting sites have rightfully named the Crew as the favorite to win this game. But considering Cincinnati’s recent record, I believe the odds for the draw and the away win are definitely worth considering here.
Columbus Crew vs. FC Cincinnati Preview
It’s fair to say that Columbus has picked up a series of mixed results this year. Recent victories over Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union have kept the Black and Gold at the top of the Eastern Conference, but a defeat to New York City and a draw with Cincinnati have prevented the club from opening up a substantial lead.
Ultimately, Caleb Porter’s men find themselves at the top of the table due to their remarkable defensive record. The Crew has only conceded two goals in nine regular-season games, with three clean sheets coming in their previous four outings.
However, the recent lack of a goals is a slight cause for concern. Columbus has netted just once in their last three games, and that doesn’t bode well for the visit of a strong-willed Cincinnati outfit.
Cincinnati doesn’t score many goals, either. In fact, Jaap Stam’s men are the second-lowest scorers in the division. But the Orange and Blue has recently gained a reputation as one of the most well-organized teams in MLS.
Under the guidance of former Manchester United star Stam, Cincinnati has become extremely tough to beat. Following eye-catching MLS is Back Tournament victories over heavyweights Atlanta United and New York Red Bulls, Stam’s team has sealed draws with DC United, Chicago, and perhaps most significantly, Columbus.
Granted, Cincinnati hasn’t managed to hit the back of the net since the restart. But the team has prevented three of their previous four opponents from scoring.
Prediction and Betting Pick
If I had to describe Cincinnati in one word, I would have to say stubborn. The Orange and Blue doesn’t offer much of a threat in attack, but the team as a whole is very solid. It could be argued that Stam’s tactics are boring. However, Cincinnati continues to take points from so-called “bigger clubs”. Columbus should win this game, but I’m backing the away side to frustrate the host and snatch another valuable point.
