Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United – MLS, November 8, 2020

| November 5, 2020 8:21 am PDT

Atlanta beat Cincinnati last weekend to keep their playoff dreams alive, but the Five Stripes must win again on Sunday, November 8, when they face Columbus in Ohio.

The Crew secured their playoff spot a few weeks ago, but having won just two of their last nine games, it’s fair to say that Caleb Porter’s men are crawling over the finish line.

You can find my Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United prediction and betting pick below.

Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United Odds

Columbus Crew to Win 1.80
The Draw 3.80
Atlanta United to Win 3.90

Columbus (1.80) has a healthy 16-point lead over Atlanta (3.90), so it is hardly surprising that 10bet views the home side as the favorite to win this one.

But with the Five Stripes fighting for their lives, I’m sure the eye-catching price for the draw (3.80) will attract plenty of attention.

Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United Preview

If it wasn’t for their strong start to the season, the Crew would probably be battling for a top-six finish at the moment. Columbus got off to a flier earlier in the year, but their recent results have not been good enough.

Caleb Porter’s men ended a four-game winless run by seeing off New York City last month, yet they only managed to pick up one point from their next two outings. A victory over Philadelphia Union followed, but the Crew returned to losing ways against Orlando City on Wednesday.

Having taken just eight points from a possible 27 over the past few weeks, Columbus has slipped out of Supporters’ Shield contention.

Porter’s men prided themselves on their defensively solidity at the beginning of the year. Indeed, the Ohio outfit kept eight clean sheets in their opening ten regular-season games. However, in their previous ten outings, the Crew has failed to achieve a single shutout.

Columbus is still in a strong position heading into the playoffs, but the backline must improve.

On the other hand, the Five Stripes can count themselves lucky to still be in with a chance of qualifying for the postseason. Atlanta has only managed to win six of their 22 matches this term, while only two sides in the Eastern Conference have lost more.

It is no secret that scoring goals has been the team’s main problem. Atlanta scored at a rate of just under two goals per game to finish second in the East last year. This time around, the Five Stripes find themselves fourth from bottom having netted at a rate of exactly one goal per game.

Of course, a lengthy injury to star forward Josef Martinez has not helped the team’s cause. But Atlanta still has more than enough attacking firepower to trouble their opponents.

Stephen Glass’ men ended a six-game winless streak by beating Cincinnati 2-0 last time out. They will need a similar scoreline this weekend to stand any chance of reaching the playoffs.

Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United Betting Pick

  • The Draw

Columbus has already secured a playoff spot, but Atlanta still has everything to play for. I’m backing the Five Stripes to frustrate the Crew and snatch a draw on Sunday.

Neither side has been convincing in recent weeks, although Atlanta secured a morale-boosting victory last time out. Glass’ men will be desperate for all three points this weekend, but I can see them being forced to settle for one.
