Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City Betting Preview – MLS, August 29, 2020
Sporting Kansas City ended up on the right side of a five-goal thriller against Colorado Rapids at the MLS is Back Tournament last month, with veteran Graham Zusi scoring an injury-time penalty to earn the Wizards all three points.
The two teams go head-to-head again on Saturday, August 29, as Colorado welcomes SKC to DSG Park. Who will come out on top this time around? After assessing the odds, I share my Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City prediction and betting pick.
Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City Betting Odds
The top sports betting sites clearly think that there isn’t much between Colorado and Sporting KC right now, but I’m not so sure. Yes, the Rapids have the home advantage. But with the Wizards flying high at the top of the table, I’m surprised the price for the Colorado win isn’t a bit higher.
I discuss both teams’ prospects below.
Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City Preview
It’s difficult to know what to expect from Colorado at the moment. Robin Fraser’s men got off to the best possible start in 2020, securing back-to-back wins in their opening two games. But when the campaign was suspended, their momentum was obviously affected.
The Rapids endured a torrid time at the MLS is Back Tournament, finishing bottom of Group D after picking up just a single point from a possible nine. Fraser’s squad had a month to regroup, but Colorado returned to regular-season action with a damaging 4-1 loss to Real Salt Lake last weekend.
If the Commerce City outfit can stop conceding goals, I’m sure the club will begin to move up the table. But as things stand, only Vancouver has conceded more goals than the Rapids in the Western Conference. Needless to say, Colorado can’t expect to get anywhere with such a poor defensive record.
Believe it or not, Sporting KC has actually only conceded three fewer goals than Colorado. However, the Missouri club has hit the target a whopping 17 times in seven outings. Five victories this year have seen the Wizards race to the top of the standings, although they did suffer an uncharacteristic 5-2 defeat at the hands of Houston in midweek.
Still, SKC created plenty of goalscoring opportunities against the Dynamo last time out. It feels like Peter Vermes sets up his side to outscore their opponents, but that approach can often leave the team exposed at the back. That said, I don’t think this will be an issue against a low-scoring Colorado outfit.
Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City Prediction and Pick
Sporting Kansas City to Win2.30
I’m confident that the Wizards will get the job done on Saturday. The Rapids have struggled for consistency throughout 2020, so I can’t see the home side having a big say in the outcome of this game. Sporting KC will be desperate to get back on track following a rare defeat last time out, and I’m backing the Missouri club to extend their lead at the top of the Western Conference.
