Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas – MLS, May 29, 2021

With a record of 1-3-2, FC Dallas sits rock bottom of the Western Conference. A three-match winless run has seen the Texans drop to the foot of the standings – four points behind fifth-place Colorado (3-1-2).

By contrast, the Rapids have won three of their last four games – setting the foundations for a promising campaign.

Let’s not forget that Colorado and Dallas have already faced each other this year. The two sides produced a goalless draw on the season’s opening weekend, but a lot has changed since then.

Below, I analyze the odds for Saturday’s clash before sharing my Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas prediction and betting pick.

Given that Colorado and Dallas shared the points in Texas last month, the juicy price for the draw stands out here. That said, the Toros have only won one of their five games since then.

On the flip side, the Rapids have picked up three wins since last month’s draw. Can the hosts secure their fourth victory in five matches this weekend?

Having taken just a single point from their opening two games, it’s fair to say that Colorado made a slow start to the season. But they quickly turned things around.

The Rapids edged out Vancouver 1-0 before coming from two goals down to beat Minnesota 3-2. They then secured their third win on the spin a fortnight ago, claiming an impressive 3-1 victory over Houston.

Robin Fraser’s men were beaten 2-1 by LAFC last time out, although they still gave a good account of themselves. Michael Barrios pulled a goal back after Diego Rossi’s first-half double, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Barrios has started the year strongly, bagging one goal and two assists. Needless to say, the Colombian will be eager to add to his tally against his old club following his move from Dallas during the offseason.

Diego Rubio and Cole Bassett have also impressed this term, netting two goals each. Bassett is still just 19, but he is already one of Colorado’s key performers.

Unfortunately for Luchi Gonzalez’s men, the opening weekend draw with Colorado is arguably one of their high points this season.

Granted, Dallas claimed a shock 4-1 victory over Portland at the beginning of May. But other than that, the club has had very little to cheer about in 2021.

Defeats to San Jose and Minnesota, along with draws against Houston and Real Salt Lake, have seen the Toros take just five points from their previous five matches. Worse still, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in that time.

Gonzalez’s side completely dominated RSL last weekend, enjoying 63% possession while racking up 29 shots. Still, they managed to throw away their 2-1 lead in the 86th minute and were forced to settle for a draw.

If they continue to be wasteful in front of the goal, they will struggle to move away from the bottom end of the standings.

The Rapids suffered a minor blip against LAFC last time out, but I expect them to return to winning ways when off-form Dallas comes to town. After all, Fraser’s men have been on a different level to Dallas in recent weeks.
