Prediction and Pick for Colombia vs. Peru – 2021 Copa America Third-Place Playoff

| July 8, 2021 5:59 am PDT

It is the game that no player wants to be a part of, as the two Copa America 2021 semifinal losers come together to battle the third-place playoff on Friday. Colombia and Peru could not halt the Brazil-Argentina final tournament narrative and now have one more – relatively meaningless – game to play.

With two squads full of disappointed and dejected players, it could be a case of which side puts more effort into this one as to who finishes third in the tournament. I’m going to take a look at what each side might offer here and provide my own Colombia vs. Peru betting pick.

Colombia vs. Peru Latest Betting Odds

Colombia to Win-109
The Draw+235
Peru to Win+265

With more world-renowned players performing in some of the top leagues, it is understandable why BetOnline would make Colombia the odds on favorite to win this. But that also means that more is expected of them – and it is Peru who will regard finishing third as something more to celebrate.

This has been a grueling tournament for all involved, and I think this will be a tight and largely uneventful game – but the odds for the Peru win stand out here.

Can Colombia Raise Itself Once More at Copa America 2021?

Colombia has been frustratingly inconsistent during this Copa America tournament.  It won just one game in the group stage – while losing to its opponent on Friday – and hasn’t been able to bring together its many talented players into one cohesive unit. The desire to beat Argentina in the semifinal was evident, but it had also needed a penalty shootout to get past a misfiring Uruguay in the previous round.

The absence of James Rodriguez has had a massive effect on the creativity in the middle of the pitch for La Tricolor, and it is noticeable that a very good striker such as Duvan Zapata has not scored a single goal during the tournament.

The entire Colombia squad has only managed four goals in its six games.

Head coach Reinaldo Rueda will have been pleased with the way his side kept going at Argentina in the semifinal after going a goal down early on. But he now has to raise players that would rather be starting their shortened holidays than playing for third.

Will Peru Upset the Odds One More Time?

It was always going to be a long shot to beat Brazil – in Brazil – to reach the final of the 2021 Copa America. But Peru came closer than many would have thought before kick-off, only falling to the one goal from Lucas Paqueta. Now head coach Ricardo Gareca has the opportunity to lead his team to a third-place finish in the last five tournaments for Peru. That’s to go along with the runners-up spot it managed last time.

It will have been a pleasing Copa America for Gareca. After he saw his side thrashed 4-0 by Brazil in the opening game, it settled in nicely and finished second in the group before coming from behind to beat Paraguay in the quarterfinal. A solid performance against Brazil in the semi was not quite enough, but now Peru will be confident going into this third-place playoff.

Much will depend on Pedro Gallese, who showed some incredible form in goal against Brazil, including a point-blank double save from Neymar and Richarlison.

Peru never looked overawed by its host, and if the likes of Lapadula and Garcia repeat their form from the semifinal, it should have a chance against Colombia on Friday.

My Colombia vs. Peru Betting Pick

  • Peru to Win

I’ve been very impressed with the way Peru has played in the knockout stages of this Copa America – especially the fight it showed in the semifinal with Brazil. After some hesitancy in the early stages, Gareca’s side did everything it could to get back into the game.

While I think Peru will repeat that level of determination here, I’m not sure the same can be said for Colombia. There was more expectation for La Tricolor – even up against Messi and company – and I’m not sure the desire will be as intense as with the Peru players to finish third.

Colombia does have the better team on paper, but I feel as though heads will drop very quickly if it doesn’t find the net early on in this game. That will allow Peru to come through and claim third at what has been an intriguing Copa America.
