Picks for the Clean Harbors 150 – NASCAR Truck Series (2022)

| June 15, 2022 2:49 pm PDT

I almost always pick Kyle Busch in the Truck Series, so of course he wins the one race I didn’t have him among my top picks. At least we know that was his final Truck Series race of the 2022 season.

The NASCAR Truck Series will have the spotlight as the only series in action this weekend. They’ll head to Knoxville Raceway for a battle on the dirt. This will be the second dirt race of the season, with Ben Rhodes winning the Bristol Dirt race.

Take a look at my Clean Harbors 150 picks.

Chandler Smith (+650)

Chandler Smith wasn’t much of a factor last season, but he closed 2021 by winning two of the final four races. His success has continued in 2022, as he sits second in the standings through 12 races.

Smith won the second race of the season at Las Vegas. That’s his lone win, but he’s riding a streak of five straight finishes of eighth or better. That helps him make my Clean Harbors 150 predictions.

Last year was the first time the Truck Series visited Knoxville. The numbers show that Smith was one of the top contenders.

  • Starting Position: 10th
  • Finishing Position: 2nd
  • Laps Led: 71 of 171

Smith led a race-high 71 laps, but there was a rash of cautions late in the race. He lost the lead in the final 10 laps, but my NASCAR betting picks aren’t forgetting about his performance.

He had a rough performance in this year’s Bristol Dirt race, but Smith has impressed throughout the season. His Knoxville performance gives him the upper hand in my NASCAR picks. His odds show that he enters Saturday’s race as a top contender.

Can Smith redeem last year’s crushing defeat?

Todd Gilliland (+700)

Todd Gilliland returns to the Truck Series for his first start since the end of the 2021 season. Gilliland has struggled in his first season in the Cup Series, but his Clean Harbors 150 odds suggest he’ll be a top contender.

Gilliland had a strong performance in last year’s Bristol Dirt race, scoring a fourth-place finish. We talked about Chandler Smith’s strong performance at Knoxville, but Gilliland may have had the best truck.

  • Starting Position: 3rd
  • Stage 1 Finish: 2d
  • Stage 2 Finish: 3rd
  • Race Finish: 4th
  • Laps Led: 61 of 179
  • Average Driver Rating: 130.1 (1st)

He had the highest driver rating and second-highest average running position. He dominated the opening portion of the race but couldn’t take advantage of the carnage to score the victory. Still, a pair of top-five finishes is enough for my Clean Harbors 150 predictions.

Gilliland will drive the No. 17 truck for DGR Racing. The truck has had success, scoring four top 10 finishes in 12 races. Ryan Preece nearly won at Charlotte before a late crash.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Gilliland ended Saturday’s race in victory lane. Will your NASCAR predictions include him?

Carson Hocevar (+2000)

The top NASCAR betting sites made a mistake with Carson Hocevar’s odds. There’s no way the Clean Harbors 150 betting odds should have Hocevar at (+2000). I don’t understand why his odds aren’t in the (+1000) to (+1400) range.

He suffered a leg injury at Gateway, leading to Daniel Suarez relieving him at Sonoma. Hocevar started the race, so NASCAR awarded him a sixth-place finish. That gave him six top 10 finishes in 12 races.

Hocevar has been on the verge of his first career win, but it hasn’t happened. You can argue last year’s Knoxville race and this year’s Bristol Dirt race were his best opportunities.

  Knoxville Bristol Dirt
Starting Position 5th 6th
Finishing Position 16th 2nd
Laps Led 17 55
Driver Rating 118.3 (2nd) 111.4 (3rd)

A late-race crash ruined a great performance at Knoxville. Hocevar had the highest average running position. He looked even better in the Bristol Dirt race, leading 55 laps. Unfortunately, he lost the lead in the final 10 laps.

There’s no way my Clean Harbors 150 picks wouldn’t include Hocevar. He has been one of the best dirt drivers and has been in contention for multiple wins. Add in the odds, and it’s hard not to include him among your NASCAR picks.

Derek Kraus (+2500)

I can confidently say my NASCAR picks have never included Derek Kraus. Kraus only has four top-five finishes in 52 Truck Series starts, but there’s plenty of time for the 20-year-old to improve.

Kraus has had his moments this season, scoring three top 10 finishes. He finished top 10 in Stage 2 of the Bristol Dirt race, but a late-race crash led to a poor finish. Ultimately, he makes my NASCAR betting picks for his performance at Knoxville.

  • Starting Position: 1st
  • Stage 1 Finish: 1st
  • Stage 2 Finish: 1st
  • Finishing Position: 5th

He was on his way to a clean sweep, but a flat tire sent him to the back with less than 50 laps to go. Kraus showed his speed, recovering to score a top-five finish. My free Clean Harbors 150 picks value his performance before the flat tire.

We’ll have to have faith in Kraus despite a rough 2022 season. However, his (+2500) odds account for a tough season. You shouldn’t be afraid to take a chance on Kraus with your NASCAR predictions.

Can he replicate last year’s Knoxville performance?

Who Will Win the Clean Harbors 150?

My Pick: Todd Gilliland (+700)Bet on Truck Series Racing at Bovada

Once I saw Todd Gilliland on the entry list, I knew he would be my expert Clean Harbors 150 pick. Gilliland has been one of the best drivers on dirt in the Truck Series.

It doesn’t bother me that this will be his first Truck Series start of 2022. We’ve seen the No. 17 truck nearly win multiple times. My Clean Harbors 150 predictions believe that’ll continue with Gilliland behind the wheel.

Feel free to tune in to Saturday’s race at 9 p.m. ET on FS1. The Cup Series and Xfinity Series are off this week, so why not check out our F1 Canada GP betting preview.
