Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates – MLB, September 4, 2020

The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates will play a doubleheader Friday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

It’s a big day for the 16-21 Reds. They are only a couple of games behind the bottom wild-card team in the National League, so the Reds need to step up and try to win both duels on the road.

The Pirates, on the other side, were 10-24 on Thursday ahead of their closing contest of the Cubs series at PNC Park. They were sitting bottom of the NL West, four and a half games behind the Reds, and six and a half games behind the bottom wild card, so the Pirates are already in dire straits.

I bring you the best Reds vs. Pirates betting pick for the first clash of Friday’s doubleheader, while you should check out more picks and analysis on our daily sports betting page.

Reds vs. Pirates Odds

Reds -1.5+105
Pirates +1.5-125
Reds to Win-175
Pirates to Win+160
Over 7.0+105
Under 7.0-125

Don’t forget this is a shortened seven-inning game due to a doubleheader, so the totals are set slightly lower than usual. Picking the alternative lines can be very useful in situations like this one, so don’t forget to check out the top MLB betting sites.

The Reds are strong favorites despite playing away from home. The Pirates enter this series as the worst team in baseball, so I think Cincy at -175 moneyline odds is a fair price.

Reds vs. Pirates Preview

Cincy will start Luis Castillo, and the righty is having a terrible season. He’s winless in seven starts and charged for five losses while posting a 4.10 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 52/15 K/BB ratio.

Castillo will get the Pirates for the first time in 2020. He’s 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in eight career starts against Pittsburgh. Last year, Castillo pitched well against the Pirates, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts and 18 innings of work.

Steven Brault will get his seventh start of the season for the Pirates, but the lefty pitched just 18 innings in the previous six starts and one relief app in 2020. He’s 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP, but Brault is ridiculously good against the Reds, going 4-0 in four career starts and six relief appearances.

However, Brault surely won’t last for long, and the Pirates will have to lean on their bullpen that owns the ninth-worst ERA in the majors (5.01). The Reds’ relievers are even worse, posting a 5.44 ERA, enough for the 26th-best in the MLB.

Cincy is only 7-13 in its last 20 encounters with Pittsburgh. The Reds and Pirates split their first two games of the season played in Cincinnati, and both duels went in the over.

Reds vs. Pirates Pick

This is the clash of two very inefficient teams that have been struggling offensively a lot. The Reds are 28th in the league in runs scored per game (3.95), while the Pirates are 26th with 4.03 runs per contest.

Hereof, I’m looking for a strong performance by Luis Castillo. He’s still searching for his first win in 2020 which is very odd for a pitcher of his caliber. The Reds desperately need to start winning games in sequences, so their pitching staff will have to improve as soon as possible.
