The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs opened a three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Tuesday night, while the first pitch of the middle contest is set for Wednesday, September 9, at 8:15 PM ET.

The 24-18 Cubs entered this series as the NL Central leaders, four and a half games ahead of the third-placed Milwaukee Brewers, and five and a half games ahead of the 18-23 Reds.

They will look to pad that lead, while the Reds desperately need it because they were two and a half games behind the wild-card spot in the National League on Tuesday. Hereof, the stake is big for both clubs, so I’m bringing you the best Reds vs. Cubs betting pick.

Reds vs. Cubs Odds

BET ODDS
Reds +1.5 -135
Cubs -1.5 +120
Reds to Win +135
Cubs to Win -145
Over 7.0 -110
Under 7.0 -110

The Reds and Cubs met each other seven times this season before the start of their final series at Wrigley Field. The Cubs won four of those seven contests which all were played in Cincinnati, so the bookies listed them as favorites in this one, still expecting to see a close game.

The Cubs will start Yu Darvish, and the righty could easily make the difference, considering his form in 2020. Darvish is probably the biggest reason for a low line on the totals, but the Reds’ poor offense has its part, too.

Reds vs. Cubs Betting Preview

Cincy is tallying only 3.93 runs per game, ranking 28th in the majors. The Reds have the worst batting average of .211, while they are 20th in slugging percentage (.409).

On the other side, the Cubs are averaging 4.62 runs per game while slashing .230/.328/.415 which are all below league average besides the on-base percentage.

Trevor Bauer will toe the slab for the visitors, carrying a 3-3 record in seven starts along with a 2.05 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 61/13 K/BB ratio. The 29-year-old righty has had some impressive outings early in the season, but he’s yielded 10 runs on 17 hits over his previous three showings.

Bauer was charged for a loss in the Reds’ 3-0 defeat to the Cubs back in August. He allowed three runs on four hits and a couple of walks while punching out five through 5.1 innings. Interestingly, Trevor is now 4-1 with a microscopic 1.41 ERA in five career starts against the Cubs.

Yu Darvish pitched six innings in that 3-0 win over Cincy, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out eight. The 34-year-old righty is riding a seven-game win streak, allowing just five earned runs in that stretch. He’s 7-1 on the season, sporting a 1.44 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 63/8 K/BB ratio.

Darvish is 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA in his nine career starts against the Reds.

Reds vs. Cubs Betting Pick

I don’t like long streaks, and Yu’s run is completely ridiculous. Therefore, I’m not taking the Cubs even though they should win this game.

The Reds’ offense has been awful thus far, so I don’t see them bouncing back against in-form Yu Darvish. Trevor Bauer has struggled lately including a loss to the Cubs, and he should improve Wednesday, considering his earlier outings against Chicago.

That’s why I’m betting on the under, expecting both starters to dominate the opposition’s bats. Their previous matchup saw just three runs on the scoreboard.
