Churchill Downs Picks – Thursday, October 29, 2020

| October 28, 2020 2:20 pm PDT

Churchill Downs brings us a ten-race card of maiden, claiming, and allowance matches on both turf and on the main track.

According to the forecast for Louisville, Kentucky, Thursday is going to be a very wet one. While Hurricane Zeta should be just a tropical storm by the time it moves from the Gulf coast of Louisiana up to Kentucky, it is still expected to deliver thunderstorms, temps in the upper 50s, and winds around 13 mph to Louisville, so expect Churchill Downs’ tracks—turf and dirt—to be sloppy.

Also remember that while Churchill Downs does not currently permit spectators, you can check out their full race card at one of our recommended racebooks.

Read on for my Churchill Downs picks and betting tips for Thursday’s richest races.

Pick for Churchill Downs Race 6

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles for a purse of $87,000.

My money is on the 7/5 morning line favorite—Attachment Rate, with Joseph Talamo in the irons. This three-year-old colt finished in the money five of his nine career starts, winning one.

The longest odds in this race are 10/1 (Distorted Moon, with Julien Leparoux aboard), but while I like that horse’s starting record, there are three entries in this race at 6/1, so I just don’t see a money finish in Distorted Moon’s immediate future.

  • Win: Attachment Rate 7/5

Picks for Churchill Downs Race 8

This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $89,000.

I like the second-favored (3/1) entry for this race—Diamond Crazy, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione. This four-year-old filly moneyed 11 of her 16 career starts, winning five of them.

At 15/1, I have to like A.P. Princess, with veteran jockey Gerardo Corrales aboard, for a value show bet. This four-year-old filly finished in the money 14 of her 26 starts, winning six. You might even consider her for an across the board wager, but I’m just recommending the show bet.

  • Win: Diamond Crazy 3/1
  • Show: A. P. Princess 15/1

Picks for Churchill Downs Race 9

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-3/8 miles on turf for a purse of $87,000.

I’m sticking with the 3/1 morning line favorite in this race—Bluegrass Parkway, with Tyler Gaffalione in the irons. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money eight of his 12 career starts, winning one.

If the also-eligible Queens Empire (ridden by Julien Leparoux) makes it into this race, the morning line has him at 20/1, which makes him a good bargain show ticket candidate. This Irish import moneyed three of his four career starts, winning one.

  • Win: Bluegrass Parkway 3/1
  • Show: Queens Empire 20/1
