Chicago Fire vs. CF Montreal – MLS, May 29, 2021
Following five failed attempts, Chicago finally picked up their first win of the season last weekend – beating Inter Miami 1-0.
Meanwhile, Montreal suffered a disappointing defeat to FC Cincinnati. Having made a promising start to 2021, Wilfried Nancy’s men have now lost three of their last four matches.
The Canadians travel to Soldier Field on Saturday, May 29. Before we get to my Chicago Fire vs. CF Montreal prediction and pick, let’s assess the odds and analyze the teams.
Chicago Fire vs. CF Montreal Betting Odds
The Fire may have claimed an unexpected victory over Inter Miami last time out, but I don’t think that makes the home side the out-and-out favorite to win this one.
Given that Montreal sits four points ahead of Chicago in the Eastern Conference, the juicy price for the away win stands out here.
I discuss both sides’ prospects below.
Chicago vs. Montreal Preview
Having only managed to take one point from their opening five matches this year, the Fire looked set for another unsuccessful campaign. However, last weekend’s win has given the club fresh hope.
Let’s face it – nobody expected Chicago to beat Inter Miami. But after racking up 20 shots and limiting the Herons to just a single attempt on target, it’s safe to say that Raphael Wicky’s side thoroughly deserved to claim all three points last weekend.
Unsurprisingly, Luka Stojanovic got on the scoresheet against Miami. The Fire has only netted four goals this season – and Stojanovic has bagged three of them.
We all know that Wicky’s men need to improve their attacking output, but they must also tighten things up defensively. Indeed, only two teams in the East have conceded more goals this term.
Needless to say, the hosts will be hoping to take advantage of Montreal’s recent downturn on Saturday.
When Montreal crushed Canadian Classique rivals Toronto 4-2 on the season’s opening weekend, Major League Soccer went into meltdown.
In the following two rounds, the Quebec club backed up its opening-day heroics by securing impressive draws with Nashville and Columbus. But the good times didn’t last long.
Nancy’s men then lost to Vancouver before beating Miami. However, they head into their eighth match of the campaign on the back of two straight defeats – having lost to Atlanta United and Cincinnati.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession last weekend, Montreal handed Jaap Stam’s men their first win of the season. Given that Cincy had conceded 13 goals across their opening five games, the Canadians have every reason to be disappointed.
Nancy’s men have scored five more goals than Chicago, but they have also conceded just one goal less. They will be eager to avoid another humiliation this weekend.
Prediction and Pick for Chicago vs. Montreal
Although the online sportsbooks view Chicago as the clear favorite to win this one, the price for the home win offers very little value in eyes. For that reason, the draw is my Chicago Fire vs. CF Montreal prediction.
The Canadians may have lost three of their previous four outings, but they looked more solid than Chicago during the early stages of the season. With that in mind, I expect the visitors to leave Illinois with a point.
