Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers – MLB, June 25, 2021

| June 25, 2021 4:46 am PDT

The Chicago Cubs hope to keep pace with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, when they have the tough task of taking on the defending champs.

They’ll head to Dodger Stadium to battle the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have their own incentive to win with four games to make up in the NL West.

It’s a pretty epic showdown, if not for the weak pitching. Jake Arrieta and Tony Gonsolin give fans a lackluster matchup, but one that could give way to some scoring.

If you plan on betting on Friday’s tilt, take a look at my Cubs vs. Dodgers betting pick and prediction.

Cubs vs. Dodgers Odds for June 25

Cubs to Win+161
Dodgers to Win-175
Over 9-110
Under 9-110

The pricing is about right here. The top baseball betting sites correctly label L.A. the favorites. The pitching is probably a wash, but the Dodgers have the edge at the plate, they’re in better form, and they’re 23-12 at home.

Los Angeles is almost certainly the right pick here if you’re just trying to come away with a Cubs vs. Dodgers prediction. The question is if the -175 moneyline is worth it to you.

I might prefer targeting the game total. Dodger Stadium is traditionally more pitcher friendly, but neither of these arms are very scary, and L.A.’s offense also thrives at home.

With the Dodgers sliding a bit as of late, I’d suspect them to be focused and take advantage of the washed up Arrieta. That could contribute to the Over being the best bet here, but this matchup still deserves a closer look.

Cubs vs. Dodgers Game Preview

Jake Arrieta has a tough assignment on his hands. He’s a recognizable name, but he’s no longer a pitcher anyone fears.

Things aren’t usually going to go very well when he doesn’t miss bats, walk batters, and give up loads of contact. A lot of it is of the hard variety, and Arrieta is especially tough to trust against lefties.

The return of Cody Bellinger is not ideal for Arrieta here, and the Dodgers continue to inch closer to full strength. Arrieta also has not been good (6.51 ERA) on the road, and he’s allowed 13 dingers on the year.

He’s likely to get in all kinds of trouble in this spot, which plays into the Cubs not looking nearly as alluring as their moneyline might suggest.

On the other side is Tony Gonsolin, who has only appeared in three games for L.A. so far, but has displayed a nice K rate, and has prevented scoring quite well.

His biggest issue so far has been his control, as he has eight walks allowed in just nine innings. It’s fairly likely his leash is so short that Chicago can’t even exploit him, while he also hasn’t really been a hard contact guy so far.

Cubs vs. Dodgers Pick for June 25

Pick
  • Over 9
    -110

The Dodgers have the edge in the pitching department every way you look, and they have the better offense, so if you want the winner, they’re probably the way to go.

I just am not a big fan of chasing moneylines far north of -150. It’s not like -175 is egregious, and it’s the Dodgers at home, so go nuts if that’s the bet you feel better about.

Ultimately, I think the Over stands out the most.

The Cubs are just a middle of the pack team when it comes to patience, but they could still get to Gonsolin in that regard. He hasn’t had a homer problem, but that could also change against the 5th best power offense in baseball.

L.A. can tee off against anyone, too. Arrieta has been extremely hittable, so why bet against them here? I think the Dodgers straight up is really safe, but this total feels a bit low when you’re looking at two explosive offenses and less than elite pitching.
