Chelsea vs. Leicester City – English Premier League, May 18, 2021

| May 17, 2021 1:54 pm PDT

Soccer schedules have a funny way of working. Just three days after losing the FA Cup final to Leicester at Wembley, Chelsea now has a chance of revenge as it faces the same team at Stamford Bridge in the league.

But there is a lot more riding on this one. Defeat for either club could have a big effect on whether it qualifies for the Champions League or not, with Liverpool just waiting for either to slip up.

Chelsea vs. Leicester City Betting Odds

Chelsea to Win-134
The Draw+270
Leicester City to Win+420

These odds have really got me thinking about who to back here. It’s as if the bookmakers are unaware that Leicester still need points to ensure a top four finish.

Losing at Stamford Bridge could mean dropping out of the Champions League places altogether. That makes the draw and away win bets very enticing at these prices.

Match Preview

Usually, beating a team that has just beaten you only brings a sense of pride. But if Chelsea wins on Tuesday, it will be the London club that goes closer to booking a Champions League place without having to overcome Manchester City in this season’s final at the end of the month.

Thomas Tuchel will need to get his tactics right though. His misplaced fear of Jamie Vardy allowed others to come through on Saturday.

Vardy is a very good player but hasn’t scored that many recently, so concentrating on him was a mistake. Chelsea did look very dangerous in the first half especially though, so a little more luck might make all the difference on Tuesday.

Leicester’s players will need to get over the jubilation of winning the club’s first ever FA Cup final quickly, as there is still a lot to play for in the final games of the season.

A defeat here – and a Liverpool win on Wednesday against Burnley – could see the Foxes drop to fifth before the last round of fixtures.

Jonny Evans limped off at the weekend but Brendan Rodgers should have no further injury worries for this midweek game. His players soaked up a good deal of Chelsea’s pressure in the cup final and will be confident of being able to repeat the trick once again. A return to the goals for Vardy would be ideal timing.

My Picks for Chelsea vs. Leicester City

  • Chelsea to Win

I’m not a fan of the odds offered here for the Chelsea win but, with everything to play for, I think that the home side will come out on top on Tuesday.

Losing the cup final – especially with that ‘goal’ disallowed by VAR right at the end – was a massive blow for the Chelsea players, but it could be used as an incentive to make sure Champions League qualification is assured this week.
