Chelsea vs. Aston Villa – EPL, December 28, 2020

| December 28, 2020 4:31 am PDT

Chelsea’s form has swung from one extreme to the other this season and Frank Lampard will be hoping that his players can put in one more good performance in 2020 to see off Aston Villa on Monday.

But Dean Smith’s side is probably the most improved in the league from last season and will feel as though it can go to Stamford Bridge and come away with another positive result.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Odds

Chelsea to Win -147
The Draw +280
Aston Villa to Win +380

The sportsbooks expect the expensively recruited Chelsea to come through on Monday – but it is Villa who has looked more consistently impressive this season. So that makes the odds for a draw, or even an away win, look more interesting to me.

Chelsea is on a bad run of results and I think the bookmakers haven’t got this one right.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Match Preview

Arsenal away on Boxing Day was supposed to end with a headache for Mikel Arteta but it was Frank Lampard’s Christmas that was ruined as he saw his team convincingly beaten. The Gunners were already three goals to the good before Tammy Abraham scored with five minutes left in the game. Jorginho’s missed penalty in stoppage time only compounded the misery.

Chelsea had hardly shown up in the first half and Lampard was visibly frustrated with the lack of energy and enthusiasm his players showed throughout. But it is up to him to get them ready for these games and he will be coming up against a Villa team on Monday that always looks up for the fight.

It was another good win on Boxing Day for Dean Smith’s men as they saw off a limited Crystal Palace side quite comfortably. Tyrone Mings did look as if he was having some trouble with the speed of the Palace attackers early on, but even his sending off just before half time didn’t seem to slow down the rest of his team.

Jack Grealish was once again at the center of everything Villa did – and he will have to do without Ross Barkley beside him once again on Monday, as he is ineligible to face his parent club. There are plenty of other underrated gems in the Villa squad though – and Chelsea could be just the latest club to find that out.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Pick

  • The Draw

Timo Werner was substituted in the crushing defeat at the hands of Arsenal and Chelsea fans might be wondering what happened to the goal scorer they were promised in the summer.

The Germany international probably just needs a little more time but Aston Villa will not be so forgiving – and the victory could be pushed out of Chelsea’s reach early on here.
