Charlotte Hornets vs. Brooklyn Nets – NBA, April 16, 2021

Although there is still a way to go until the end of the regular season, this is a vital game for both teams, who each have their own agendas tonight. The Nets managed to dislodge the long-time Eastern Conference leaders, the Philadelphia 76ers, but their reign didn’t last very long. They once again find themselves hunting them down.

The Hornets are still trying to move into one of the automatic playoff berths, and with only three spaces available between six teams, they must feel like every game is a must-win one right now.

Things have been close between these teams recently as they have alternated wins over their previous five encounters. As well as this, they have also alternated wins in their last nine matches played in Brooklyn.

However, they met only two weeks ago, and the Nets ran out 22-point victors on the night. Their defense was almost impenetrable as they managed to hold the Hornets to a score of less than 90. It was a very poor evening for the Hornets as they lost in every department and battle on the court.

Over their previous ten meetings, the Nets have averaged five more points per game than the Hornets. Their dominance has been helped by their superior rebounding performances, which was again the case when they met two weeks ago.

Here is my Hornets vs. Nets betting preview.

Hornets vs. Nets Odds

Hornets +13.5 -110
Nets -13.5 -110
Hornets To Win +800
Nets To Win -925
Over 223.5 Points -110
Under 223.5 Points -110

Even though the Nets crushed the Hornets only two weeks ago and the fact the Hornets have been lacking recently, and they’re missing quite a few players at present, I didn’t think the spread would be quite so big. When they met two weeks ago, the spread was only two and a half points, and I can’t see that much has changed since then. The spread looks a bit big as it was two weeks ago, and they got nowhere near the total that night.

Can history repeat itself tonight? Here is a tweet sent out by the Hornets highlighting their long list of injuries. I think this sends out the wrong message as it’s almost like they are looking for excuses before they have even stepped foot on the court.

Hornets News

The Hornets are on a run of three straight defeats, and the last thing they probably wanted right now was to face a team that demolished them only two weeks ago.

However, they return to the road where their form has been better as of late, and overall their 14-15 record has been good. They have only lost two of their previous eight away fixtures, and both defeats coincided with the failure of their attack as they posted scores of 89 against the Nets and 86 against the Celtics. However, their offense certainly fired last time out on the road as they racked up 127-points against the in-form Milwaukee Bucks. It must be said that the Bucks did have quite a few missing, but so did the Hornets, so I guess that’s not an excuse.

Here are the latest betting trends for Charlotte:

Against The Spread

  • They have only won two of their previous six matches.
  • The Hornets are 6-13 in their last 19 games against the Nets.
  • On the road against Brooklyn, they have lost six of the previous nine matchups.
  • They have lost four of their last six games against Eastern Conference opposition.

Points Total

  • The total has gone under in 12 of their previous 15 matches.
  • Eight of their last ten games on the road have gone under the betting total.

Other Pointers

  • Charlotte is 2-4 in their last six games against Brooklyn.
  • The Hornets have only won one of their previous six matches against teams based in the Atlantic Division.

The Hornets have a subpar offense that is only averaging 110-points per game. This is largely down to a low field goal percentage of 45% this season. However, it appears that it’s not their shooting ability that is lacking as they have an excellent success rate from the three-point range. This suggests they aren’t making enough openings in and around the basket. This is highlighted by the high number of turnovers they are averaging each night.

Their defense has been decent this season and held up most nights. However, they haven’t defended as well on the road this season, conceding three points more per game on average.

As previously mentioned, the Hornets have a long list of injuries, highlighting the lack of depth they have in their squad. Tonight they will miss Hayward, Monk, Graham, Ball, and Darling. Wanamaker and Washington both face late fitness tests, but the early signs are they will likely miss out.

Nets News

The Nets have only won one of their last three games. Hence their stay at the top of the Eastern Conference was short-lived. Their only win during those games came against the struggling Timberwolves. Brooklyn dominated the match from start to finish and failed to lose a single quarter of the game. Their two defeats came against the Lakers and Eastern Conference rivals the 76ers, so they can be excused for the losses, especially as they put up a spirited fight against the 76ers with many first-team members missing.

Their form at home has been superb, and they have only lost seven of their 29 games played at the Barclays Center. However, they did get thumped by 25-points last time out against the Lakers, which ended a run of nine straight wins.

Here are the latest betting trends for Brooklyn:

Against The Spread

  • They have only won two of their previous seven matches against teams from the east coast.

Points Total

  • Four of their last five games have gone over the betting total.
  • Only one of their previous six matches against Charlotte has failed to go under the points total.
  • All of their last six games played on a Friday have seen the betting total go over.

Other Pointers

  • Brooklyn is 15-5 in their last 20 matches.

Brooklyn has a phenomenal offense and is ranked number one in the field goal rankings this season. They also have a success rate of 38% from deep which is amongst the best in the league and proves they can hurt you from all angles, across the court.

The Nets work their ball around the court incredibly well, which has helped their scoring percentages and meant they make a high number of assists each game. James Harden has been the architect behind many of these assists, and he has almost doubled his career average this season, suggesting he is enjoying his basketball with the Nets. However, with him currently out on the sidelines, there is a big void to fill.

However, their defense is lacking, and they are conceding 114-points per game on average. , they have defended better at home and are conceding three fewer points per game on average this season. That, combined with the fact the Hornets are scoring three fewer points on the road this season, means it could be a difficult night for Charlotte this evening.

They don’t tend to make many steals which is an area for improvement, but given that they usually have the lion’s share of the ball, this hasn’t affected them too much this season.

The Nets also have a long list of injuries at present. As well as James Harden, they will miss Dinwiddie, Johnson, and Chiozza this evening.

Hornets vs. Nets Betting Pick

  • Under 223.5 Points

This is a game between two depleted teams, which could mean we see less action than usual. The Nets will welcome back Kevin Durrant tonight, but they are currently managing his game time and nursing him back to full fitness after a long layoff.

If they get in front early, which there is every chance of happening, it could mean the big man is rested, which again could affect the scoring numbers. They have a combined average of only 215-points over their last ten meetings, and I believe this game could follow the game two weeks ago and be very low-scoring.
