Charles Town Races Picks – Saturday, February 13, 2021

| February 12, 2021 3:00 pm PDT

Charles Town Races brings us eight maiden, allowance, and claiming matches for our Saturday wagering and entertainment.

Remember that spectators are welcome at Charles Town Races. If you plan to attend, expect snow showers, highs in the upper 20s, and mild winds around five mph.

Read on for my Charles Town Races picks and tips for Saturday’s thoroughbred competition.

Pick for Race 3 at Charles Town Races

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $29,000.

My money is on the fourth-favored (4/1) entry here — Hypothesis, ridden by Gerald Almodovar. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money 11 of his 13 career starts, winning six, including a couple of Black Type stakes races in late 2019. His most recent win (and start) was at Charles Town last November.

For the sake of comparison, the morning line favorite in this race moneyed nine of his 11 starts, winning two.

Neither of the two long-odds entries looks good for a money finish, so let’s save ours.

  •  Win: Hypothesis 4/1

Picks for Race 5 at Charles Town Races

This is a claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $12,000.

I like the 7/2 morning line favorite for this race — Bold Valor, with Fredy Peltroche in the irons. This four-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 17 career starts, winning six.

The only long-odds entry worth risking a show bet here is the 12/1 also-eligible Wallet, with Reshawn Latchman aboard. This six-year-old gelding finished in the money ten of his 19 career starts, winning two. If Wallet starts, throw a show bet his way.

  •  Win: Bold Valor 7/2
  •  Show: Wallet 12/1 (if starts)

Pick for Race 7 at Charles Town Races

This is an allowance race for West Virginia-bred four-year-olds and upward running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $28,000.

My money is on the second-favored (5/2) entry in this race — Golden Appeal, with Carlos J. Delgado in the irons. This five-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 17 career starts, winning five, which gives him a good statistical lead over the M/L favorite, not to mention the rest of this eight-horse field.

As far as value show bets are concerned, I see no long-odds entries likely to do more than chase the other horses across the finish line, so let’s save our money.

  •  Win: Golden Appeal 5/2
