CF Montreal vs. FC Cincinnati – MLS, May 22, 2021

| May 17, 2021 1:07 pm PDT

Another season, another FC Cincinnati losing streak.

The 2021 MLS campaign may only be a few weeks old, but Jaap Stam’s men have already lost three of their four matches. Following a draw with Nashville on the opening weekend, Cincy has taken just one point from a possible 12 this year.

CF Montreal faces the Eastern Conference cellar dwellers in Florida on Saturday, May 22, having made an inconsistent start to the new season (W2-D2-L2).

Below, I analyze the current form of both sides, assess the odds for Saturday’s clash, and finish by sharing my CF Montreal vs. FC Cincinnati prediction and pick.

Montreal Team News and Analysis

Montreal kicked off the season by stringing together a three-game unbeaten streak, picking up one win and two draws in the process. However, the Canadians have since suffered two defeats in their previous three outings.

After losing to Vancouver, Wilfried Nancy’s men secured an impressive victory over Inter Miami. But they were unable to prevent an agonizing defeat to Atlanta United last weekend.

Although Nancy’s men only saw 36% possession at Marcedes-Benz Stadium, they produced ten shots and managed to hold on until the dying seconds. Still, a 94th-minute winner from Marcelino Moreno saw Montreal leave Georgia with nothing.

The Canadians have netted eight goals this term, making them the second-highest scorers in the Western Conference. On the other hand, they have conceded seven goals, meaning only three teams in the division have a poorer defensive record.

Given the unpredictable nature of Montreal’s 2021 form, it is difficult to predict exactly what kind of performance the team will produce this weekend.

Can Cincy Avoid Four Straight Losses?

Rooted to the foot of the Eastern Conference standings, it’s fair to say that the Orange & Blue find themselves in an all too familiar position.

Having finished rock bottom of the overall standings in each of their previous two seasons, the 2019 expansion club needed to hit the ground running this year. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened.

Cincy managed to register a respectable 2-2 draw with Nashville on the opening weekend, but it’s been all downhill since then. Heavy defeats to New York City (5-0) and Orlando City (3-0) soon followed, with a 3-2 loss to Inter Miami coming last time out.

Stam’s men found themselves 2-0 down inside 38 minutes against the Herons but managed to score twice and level the score with eight minutes remaining. Still, there was enough time for Gonzalo Higuain to inflict a third straight loss on Cincy.

The Ohio outfit has already conceded a whopping 13 goals in four matches this season, at a rate of 3.25 goals per game. With high-scoring Montreal up next, Cincy’s defensive record is likely to get a whole lot worse.

No shocks here!

As you can see, the best online sportsbooks aren’t giving Cincy much of a chance on Saturday. That is hardly surprising, though, as Stam’s men have been nothing short of dreadful in their previous three matches.

The Canadians haven’t been able to maintain their early-season form in recent games, although they were extremely unlucky to lose last time out. Needless to say, Montreal is the rightful favorite.

My Montreal vs. Cincinnati Betting Pick

Pick
  • CF Montreal to Win
    1.68

In my opinion, the visit of Cincinnati provides Montreal with the perfect opportunity to get back on track and return to winning ways. Nancy’s men will be eager to put last weekend’s narrow loss behind them, and they should be able to do just that on Saturday.

Ultimately, Stam’s men have picked up where they left off last season – conceding goals and losing games. For that reason, the home win is my CF Montreal vs. FC Cincinnati prediction.
