Central Coast Mariners vs. Western Sydney Wanderers – A-League, January 19, 2021

| January 18, 2021 11:12 am PDT

The Mariners will be looking to extend their winning start to the 2020/21 A-League season when the Wanderers visit Central Coast Stadium on Tuesday, January 19.

Alen Stajcic’s men find themselves second in the table following two straight victories, while four points from a possible nine mean WSW is sixth.

I assess the bookies’ odds before sharing my Central Coast Mariners vs. Western Sydney Wanderers prediction and betting pick.

Central Coast Mariners vs. Western Sydney Wanderers Odds

Central Coast Mariners to Win3.30
The Draw3.45
Western Sydney Wanderers to Win2.15

Despite their promising start to the new campaign, the Mariners (3.30) head into Tuesday’s clash as the outsiders with the top online betting sites.

It is important to remember that the Wanderers (2.15) finished 15 points ahead of Central Coast in last term’s standings. The bookmakers don’t seem to have forgotten that.

Central Coast Mariners vs. Western Sydney Wanderers Preview

Having finished five points adrift at the bottom of the table last season, nobody was expecting the Mariners to do anything out of the ordinary in 2020/21. But they have set out to prove their doubters wrong.

Following a 1-0 victory over F3 Derby rivals Newcastle Jets, Central Coast beat newcomers Macarthur FC 2-0 last time out, meaning the Gosford underdogs have kicked off the campaign with back-to-back clean-sheet victories.

The Yellow & Navy deserved to beat the Jets, recording 18 shots in their first game. But after only seeing 30% possession and producing just three shots on target in their previous outing, it could be argued that Stajcic’s side was fortunate to beat Macarthur.

Still, goals from youngsters Daniel De Silva and Jordan Smylie got the job done, while experienced goalkeeper Mark Birighitti kept his team in the match at the other end of the pitch.

Prior to the start of the season, three straight wins would have been unimaginable for the Mariners. However, it is now looking like a genuine possibility.

The Wanderers have actually played one less game than Central Coast, yet they still find themselves two points behind the unexpected frontrunners.

After losing 1-0 to the Bulls just before the turn of the year, WSW beat Newcastle 2-1 in their first game of 2021. Last time out, Carl Robinson’s men snatched a draw against rivals Sydney FC, although they were gifted a point by Sky Blues shot-stopper Andrew Redmayne.

Following Kosta Barbarouses’ penalty midway through the second half, a goalkeeping blunder allowed James Troisi to equalize five minutes later. The match eventually finished 1-1.

Things weren’t looking good for the Wanderers when they were beaten by Macarthur on the opening day, but they have since turned things around. Having taken four points from their previous two games, WSW will be confident of ending the Mariners’ winning streak.

Mariners vs. Wanderers Prediction and Pick

  • The Draw

Given the manner with which Central Coast has started the season, the odds for both the home win and the draw seem very generous here. Not only have the Mariners won each of the two games this term, but they have also kept two clean sheets in the process.

On the other hand, the Wanderers have been pretty unpredictable. They may not be able to beat the Mariners, although I can see them coming away from Gosford with a point.
