Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction for February 15th, 2022

| February 14, 2022 10:29 pm PDT

The 5th and 6th Eastern Conference seeds will go head to head on Tuesday night. The 5th seeded 76ers will be hosting the 6th seeded Celtics on TNT. This should be a great matchup, as both teams are just a couple of games out of first place in the tight Eastern Conference.

The 76ers are going through a bit of a lineup reset with the blockbuster trade to acquire James Harden from the Brooklyn Nets. Harden will not play through the All-Star break, so the Celtics could take advantage of their thin lineup.

Joel Embiid is more than capable enough of keeping the 76ers in it though. This should be a close game with two teams who are looking to prove themselves as top competitors coming out of the Eastern Conference.

Let’s take a look at the odds for this game and how each team is looking.

Odds for Celtics vs. 76ers

Boston Celtics -1.5-115
Philadelphia 76ers +1.5-105
Over 210-115
Under 210-105

This is looking to be a very close game and the odds reflect that. The Celtics are just barely favored to win by 1.5 points on the road.

Boston is one of the hottest teams in the NBA with a current 8 game winning streak. They may be hot, but the 76ers were able to beat them the last time they played by 12 (January 14th).

Both of these teams play at a slow pace and play good defense. If you were wondering with the point total was so low, that’s a big reason why.

Don’t be surprised if this game comes down to a buzzer beater with how close this game is shaping up to be.

You can find those exact odds on BetOnline, so head over there to place your bets. Let’s take a look at why each team can win this game.

Why the Celtics Will Win

The Celtics should have a slight upper hand in this game for a couple of reasons. The biggest thing is that they are on fire right now. An 8 game winning streak is always impressive in the NBA, regardless of who the team plays.

Jayson Tatum is going to be coming off a big game against the Hawks the last time they played. Tatum dropped 38 points and 10 rebounds and led them to a 10 point victory.

Tatum scored 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists against Philadelphia the last time they played. However, he did commit a whopping 7 turnovers as well. If they want to win this game, Tatum will have to play much cleaner.

Marcus Smart was inactive for that game, so he should bring a nice boost into the lineup for Boston.

The Celtics also have some good big men to match up with Embiid. Robert Williams and Al Horford have been solid for Boston this year and could slow Embiid down just enough to get a win.

Embiid went for 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists the last time against Boston. That’s a good night for most people, but Embiid is capable of a much bigger line than that.

Williams and Horford can “slow down” Embiid, while the 76ers other players will have to step up. That didn’t work out well for them last game with only two players scoring more than 10 points outside of Embiid in their last game.

The 76ers could be one of the best teams in the league once Harden makes his debut, but that won’t happen in this game. Philadelphia is extra thin since trading away Seth Curry and Andre Drummond in the package for Harden.

That could be all the Celtics need to win this game.

Why the 76ers Will Win

The 76ers may be thin because of the Harden trade, but they can still pull off a win here. They get to play at home and they are coming off an impressive win over the Cavaliers. The whole reason why they game was impressive was because of Joel Embiid.

Embiid went nuclear against the Cavs with a huge triple double. He went for 40 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists and was the only player to score more than 16 points for the Sixers. The Cavs have been a respectable team this year, so that game was even more impressive.

The Celtics give up the second fewest points to opposing centers, but Embiid is a whole other animal. He could absolutely go off with another monster game and the 76ers are going to need him to.

Other players that are going to have to step their game up include Tobias Harris and Tyrese Maxey. Harris chipped in with 17 in their last game against the Celtics, while Maxey added in an impressive 23.

The 76ers as a team were able to commit a ton of turnovers against the Celtics. They got 12 steals as a team (Thybulle with 5), and 4 blocks as well. Boston ended up committing 20 total turnovers compared to the 76ers 9.

Another impressive defense effort for the 76ers would pay huge dividends in a game like this. Not having Curry and Drummond hurts big time, so winning the turnover battle is going to be huge.

It is never impossible to win a game when you have a player like Joel Embiid on your team. You might just have to give the MVP to him if he explodes and leads the 76ers to a win here.

Pick and Prediction for Celtics vs. 76ers

In what should be a very close game, it usually makes sense to take the points. Well for this game the spread is very small in the Celtics favor. I think the Celtics are very capable of pulling off another win to add to their impressive win streak in this one.

Philadelphia is a very tough team, but the Harden trade hurts their team right now. Seth Curry and Andre Drummond provided solid depth for the 76ers, but they have to rely on players even further down their roster.

There aren’t going to be many games where the Celtics turn the ball over 20 times, as they did the first time these two teams played. I think the turnovers and the different looking lineups this time around play heavily in the Celtics favor.
