Celta Vigo vs. Real Sociedad – La Liga, November 1, 2020

Celta Vigo started this LaLiga campaign on a positive note of three games without a loss (W1) but then failed to get a win in the next four, losing three without scoring a single goal in the process. They managed to snap a three-game losing skid with a 1-1 draw at Levante, but are still the least efficient side in the league with only four goals in seven matches. Celta is in 17th place with six points.

Real Sociedad, on the contrary, is the highest-scoring team in LaLiga so far with 14 goals, while they also have the second-best defense that conceded just three goals in seven rounds. They are at the top of the league, surprisingly ahead of Real Madrid, Granada, Villarreal, and Atletico Madrid with 14 points. Sociedad was on a four-game winning run in all competitions, in which they allowed only one goal, but that streak ended in a 1-0 home defeat to Napoli in the Europa League.

After a decent start, Celta Vigo returned to the form that saw them narrowly avoid relegation last year, with a 1-1 draw last time out extending their winless LaLiga streak to five matches (D2, L3). In fact, they’ve recorded the same results after seven games as they did after seven matches in 2019/20, as well as the same goals scored on average (0.57 per contest). The last time they had a worse goal average at this stage of a top-flight season was back in 1992/93.

Their lone victory came at Estadio de Balaidos but was followed by two losses here by a 2+ goal difference after Celta allowed in the first 15 minutes. The hosts can draw some hope from LaLiga H2H dues held at this venue though, with only two defeats from nine in all competitions since Celta’s last promotion to the top tier (W2, D5, L2).

Oscar Garcia cannot count on Joseph Aidoo (illness), Sergio Alvarez (knee), Hugo Mallo (muscle), and Kevin Vazquez (calf), while Ruben Blanco is questionable with Achilles tendon injury.

Real Sociedad travels here after recording their best seven-game start to a LaLiga campaign since 2002/03 – a season in which they ended second, and one of five seasons in their history that they finished in Spain’s top two. A league-high 2.0 goals scored per match, as well as a second league-high 4.29 average shots on target, have been the main reasons for their success.

Fans of the high-flying visitors have watched them get three wins without allowing a goal on the road in all competitions – each of which they started as a favorite – as Sociedad now attempt four straight away victories for the first time since 1987/88.

Imanol Alguacil will be without Luca Sangalli (knee), Alex Sola (knee), and Igor Zubeldia (knee), while Asier Illarramendi (hip) and Joseba Zaldua (muscle) are questionable to face Celta on Sunday.

Real Sociedad won five of the previous ten H2H encounters (D2, L3), but Celta won two of the last three, including the most recent one. Still, a draw is the most frequent outcome when these two rivals meet at Balaidos, as even eight of the last 14 meetings here finished without a winner. None of the last five H2H matches ended in a draw, though.

Even though Celta failed to score a goal in defeats to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Osasuna, they didn’t have luck and they didn’t play that badly. That’s why I am backing them to find the back of the net here, while Sociedad shouldn’t have problems to score on the other end.
