Carolina Panthers vs. Kansas City Chiefs – NFL Week 9, 2020
The Carolina Panthers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time since 2016, as these two interconference foes meet in Week 9 of the 2020 NFL season at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Chiefs have won their previous two matchups with the Panthers and will look to extend that streak, while Carolina enters Week 9 riding a three-game losing streak.
The visitors will be fired up to upset the odds Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, so here’s my best Carolina Panthers vs. Kansas City Chiefs betting pick and tips.
Panthers vs. Chiefs Odds
The Chiefs just covered a 19.5-point spread in Week 8, and once more, they are listed as massive home favorites.
I’m not surprised by the odds and wouldn’t be shocked if the bettors jump on the Chiefs early, so prepare for some slight odds changes in the next few days.
Assessing Carolina Panthers
The Panthers extended their losing streak last Thursday, suffering a 25-17 home defeat to the Atlanta Falcons. They dropped to 3-5 on the season, and the Panthers have covered the spread four times in the process.
Carolina struggled on both sides of the ball in Week 8, allowing 401 total yards to the Falcons who converted just two of their six red-zone attempts.
Teddy Bridgewater finished the game with just 176 yards for one touchdown and one interception, while D.J. Moore posted both his receptions for 55 yards in the last ten minutes of the fourth quarter.
At least, the Panthers had a long week to rest and prepare for the toughest possible road trip in the NFL. Also, Christian McCaffrey should return from a six-game absence due to an ankle injury, and his presence would be a huge boost for the Panthers’ struggling offense.
Carolina is scoring 22.4 points per contest (25th in the NFL). In two of their previous three outings, the Panthers couldn’t surpass a 17-point mark. They are yielding 24.1 points per game (13th).
Assessing Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are coming off a convincing 35-9 home victory over the hapless New York Jets this past Sunday, extending their win streak to three games.
Patrick Mahomes put on a strong performance, tossing for 416 yards and five touchdowns. Travis Kelce had eight receptions for 109 yards and a TD, while Tyreek Hill added four catches for 98 yards and a couple of scores.
The Chiefs had no problems shutting down the Jets. Now, they are fourth in the league in points allowed per game (19.0), while the Chiefs’ secondary surrenders the third-fewest passing yards in the NFL (201.3).
The reigning champs are 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS on the season. They are topping the AFC West ahead of the 4-3 Las Vegas Raiders, but the Chiefs are still one game behind the undefeated leaders of the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Panthers vs. Chiefs Pick
Since a 40-32 defeat to Las Vegas in Week 5, the Chiefs have looked unstoppable. They met a couple of bad teams in the previous two rounds (Broncos and Jets), and complacency wasn’t an issue for Andy Reid’s team.
I expect to see more of the same in Week 9 when the Chiefs host the Panthers. Carolina could be a tricky opponent if CMC returns, but McCaffrey cannot help the Panthers’ D that will struggle to cope with the Chiefs’ fluid offense.
This year, Kansas City has so many dangerous weapons both through the air and on the ground. The Chiefs will find a way to dismantle the Panthers’ defense, so I’m backing the hosts to win by 10 or more points.
Kansas City is 10-1 SU and ATS in its last 11 outings at home when listed as a fave of 9.5 points or more.
