Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons – NFL, October 11, 2020

| October 6, 2020 12:40 pm PDT

The Atlanta Falcons couldn’t be off to a worse start in 2020. At 0-4, the “fire Dan Quinn” chants can be heard across the globe.

The Dirty Birds have been pretty good on offense, but they’ve blown two huge leads, and have had zero answers for offenses. Atlanta is as banged up as ever, but the way they’ve been losing, there’s really no excuse.

Atlanta will try to right the ship at home against the rival Panthers in week five, however. Carolina comes in at 2-2 after winning two straight, and they’ve kept things together despite losing star running back Christian McCaffrey.

Can the Panthers make it three in a row, or will the Falcons stop the bleeding with a clutch divisional win at home?

Let’s find out in our week five Panthers vs. Falcons betting pick and prediction.

Panthers vs. Falcons Odds

Panthers (+2.5)-105
Falcons (-2.5)-115
Panthers to Win+125
Falcons to Win-145
Over 53.5-112
Under 53.5-108

BetOnline has the Falcons as mild favorites when you look at the point spread. It’s a tad surprising, seeing as Atlanta has blown two huge leads and have yet to win a game.

Carolina, meanwhile, has been in every game this year and are coming in hot with two consecutive victories. The spread is too small to get fussy over, but the Panthers do offer nice value as an odd underdog with their +125 moneyline at BetNow.

If you’re not sure which side to pick in this one, you can just bet on a fun 53.5 game total. It’s a bit high when you look at how Atlanta’s offense performed on Monday Night Football, but there’s optimism for the Over.

Not only is there a lot of speed on the turf in this one, but there is little-to-no defense to be had on either side. The Falcons have allowed 30+ points in every single game this year, and Carolina has done so twice.

Panthers vs. Falcons Week 5 Preview

While the Panthers opened the year with some spotty defense, that group has rounded into form. Two weeks ago, they held rising rookie Justin Herbert in check in a 21-16 win, and last week they contained Kyler Murray (just 133 yards passing!) in another win.

I’m not here to crown Carolina’s defense among the elite, but they sure have looked sharp the last two weeks. You can say the same for their offense, as Teddy Bridgewater put up 276 yards and a touchdown last week.

Heck, he even showed off his running ability.

Bridgewater is more of a game manager by trade, but he’s shown some upside in this Panthers offense. With Mike Davis filling in admirably for the injured C-Mac and Bridgewater having several speedy options to target down the field, the Panthers are sneaky dangerous as they shoot for a 3-2 start.

Atlanta, meanwhile, is on life support. Calvin Ridley was held without a catch last week, and the team lost superstar wide receiver Julio Jones to another hamstring issue.

If Jones is down for the count, an already struggling team has it even tougher. The only real advantage here is the ground game, as Todd Gurley has a mouth-watering matchup on paper against a weak Panthers run defense.

Panthers vs. Falcons Prediction and Pick

I just don’t see the upside in trusting in the Falcons. They may not have the awesome matchup the numbers suggest, and Gurley has looked slow.

Are we suddenly supposed to believe he’ll dominate and lead the Falcons to their first win of the year? I refuse to bite, which leads us to two rock-solid bets.

The first is the Over. There just isn’t enough reliable defense here, and with a lot of nice speed being dropped into a dome game with both teams badly wanting a win, an explosion of sorts is to be expected.

The Over feels like an easy call in this spot, but we can also seek a little extra value and bet on the Panthers to win. Carolina has the edge in coaching, balance, defense, and momentum.

It’d take a revival for Gurley to control this game, and we’d also have to buy the Falcons either dictating this game and/or not collapsing. I don’t trust any of that. I like the Over and Carolina this week, and both figure to be strong NFL bets in week five.
