Prediction for Cardinals vs. Cubs – Sunday, June 5th, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs will conclude their five-game series on Sunday night baseball. The teams have alternated wins, meaning the winner of Sunday’s game will win the series.
St. Louis has been the better team, but Chicago has been competitive. Their offense has scored at least four runs in the first four games of this series. Will that continue on Sunday night?
The Cardinals also look strong on offense, but they only scored one run in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader. Check out the odds for the Cardinals vs. Cubs.

The St. Louis Cardinals have an eight-game advantage in the standings, but you wouldn’t know it from the betting odds. The best MLB sportsbooks took note of the Chicago Cubs’ success in this series.
It won’t be easy to predict the winner because both teams have been impressive against the spread. They have matching 30-24 records, each covering twice in this series.
The latest injury update features Cardinals outfielder Corey Dickerson. Dickerson hit two home runs on Friday night but left Game 1 of Saturday’s game with a calf injury. St. Louis held him out of Game 2. Chicago continues to operate without star rookie Seiya Suzuki.
Here is my breakdown of Sunday night’s matchup.
Cardinals vs. Cubs Breakdown
The St. Louis Cardinals had a consistent start to the 2022 season, but they hung around .500. They were 20-18 following a loss to the New York Mets on May 19. Since then, the Cardinals have looked like a playoff team.
They’ve won 11 of their last 16 games, including a sweep of the San Diego Padres. That could go a long way in the NL Wild Card battle.
The Chicago Cubs haven’t been relevant in 2022. They’ve won four of their last six games but remain a distant 9.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
We can’t talk about the Cardinals and not spotlight Paul Goldschmidt. His 25-game hitting streak ended in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader. Check out his numbers since the hit streak began on May 7.
- .406 batting average
- 10 home runs
- 36 RBIs
- 24 runs
Nolan Arenado looked like an early NL MVP contender, but Goldschmidt stole the spotlight. Both players are why my preseason 2022 MLB playoff predictions had the Cardinals making the playoffs.
Chicago has struggled in 2022, but it hasn’t been because of their offense. They rank 10th in the majors with 242 runs. Patrick Wisdom has delivered the power, leading the team with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs.
St. Louis will send veteran Adam Wainwright to the mound. The 40-year-old continues to operate as the ace of the Cardinals.
- 2.75 ERA
- 1.19 WHIP
- 20 Walks
- 48 Strikeouts
He is coming off his best start of the season, allowing two hits with ten strikeouts in seven innings against the Padres.
Cubs starter Justin Steele has similar walk and strikeout numbers, but a 5.40 ERA and 1.58 WHIP don’t look good against Wainwright. Can he turn it around against the Cardinals?
Cardinals vs. Cubs Same Game Parlay
- Christopher Morel to Record a Hit (-210)
- Brendan Donovan to Record a Hit (-135)
- Ian Happ to Record an RBI (+170)
It’s interesting to see none of the star players in my same game parlay. Perhaps a different approach will bring more success. Feel free to back this parlay with (+581) odds.
Christopher Morel has been impressive in his rookie season. The Chicago Cubs first baseman has a .297 batting average, recording a hit in 17 of his 19 games. He recently lost an 11-game hitting streak, but he has been on a roll against the St. Louis Cardinals.
He’s 7-18 with two RBIs and five runs in the series. Morel is a big reason the Cubs’ offense ranks top 10. He should keep it going with a hit on Sunday night.
St. Louis has so many offensive stars that we forget about rookie Brendan Donovan. Donovan has looked strong in 2022, hitting .315. Check out his numbers against the Cubs.
- 6-15
- 5 RBIs
- 1 run
He’s coming off the best game of his career, going 3-5 with two doubles and four home runs. Donovan has recorded a hit in six of his last seven games. Hopefully, he’ll keep it up against the Cubs.
Ian Happ struggled at the end of May, going four straight games without a hit. However, he recovered to ride a six-game hit streak into Sunday night baseball. I wanted to have him recording a hit in my same game parlay, but the value wasn’t there.
This prop comes down to his success against Adam Wainwright. Happ is hitting 8-20 with four home runs and six RBIs against Wainwright. It wouldn’t surprise me if he picked up another RBI.
Cardinals vs. Cubs Pick
We’ve seen the Chicago Cubs compete with the St. Louis Cardinals, but I believe they’ll have a tough time in the series finale. This pick revolves around the pitching matchup.
Adam Wainwright has shown flashes of Cy Young potential. Meanwhile, Justin Steele has allowed 3+ runs in five of his ten starts. He could have a tough time with a powerful Cardinals offense.
