Canada vs. Martinique – CONCACAF Gold Cup, July 11, 2021

| July 9, 2021 9:13 am PDT

Canada and Martinique kick off their 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaigns this Sunday, July 11, going head-to-head at Children’s Mercy Park – the home of MLS team Sporting Kansas City.

Naturally, the Canadians are expected to start the tournament with a win. However, it isn’t easy to gauge how Martinique will fare as this is their first game since November 2019.

Below, I share my prediction and pick for Canada vs. Martinique. But before we get to that, let’s take a look at the odds for Sunday’s clash and analyze the teams.

Canada vs. Martinique Betting Odds

Canada to Win1.17
The Draw6.75
Martinique to Win16.00
Over 2.5 Goals1.71
Over 3.5 Goals2.85
Over 4.5 Goals5.25

All the online betting sites expect Canada (1.17) to claim a comfortable win on Sunday. As you can see, the odds for the draw bet (6.75) and the Martinique win (16.00) are massive.

In order to find better value, I have included some goal-based markets here. If the Canadians take control in Kansas, they could end up finding the back of the net on multiple occasions.

Canada Looks Set to Dominate

Having gotten off to a flying start in World Cup qualifying, Canada heads into the Gold Cup on a six-game winning streak.

Granted, John Herdman’s men haven’t faced any overly challenging opponents recently. But with a series of high-scoring victories behind them, they will be confident of hitting the ground running when the Gold Cup gets underway.

Thanks largely to an 11-0 thrashing of the Cayman Islands back in March, the Canucks have scored a whopping 31 goals across their previous six outings (5.2 goals per game).

When you look at the bigger picture, they have only conceded four goals in their last nine matches in all competitions, keeping five clean sheets in the process.

Although key forward Jonathan David isn’t included on Canada’s Gold Cup roster, there are plenty of notable names on the list. Along with a host of Major League Soccer stars, Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies adds genuine world-class quality to Herdman’s side.

Can Martinique Upset the Gold Cup Odds?

Due to the pandemic, Martinique has been deprived of international soccer for the past 18 months, making it very difficult to predict what will happen when the Lesser Antilles islanders take to the field on Sunday.

Les Matinino was on a decent run before the pandemic hit, losing just three times in 11 games between the end of 2018 and the 2019 Nations League. Needless to say, a lot has changed since then.

Bocaly’s roster features a handful of European-based players, although the majority of the squad plays in Martinique. Guys like Jean-Sylvain Babin (Sporting Gijon), Kevin Fortune (Auxerre), and Emmanuel Riviere (Crotone) will need to step up.

It is worth remembering that Martinique met Canada at the 2019 Gold Cup. Unsurprisingly, the Canadians claimed an easy 4-0 win on that occasion. Les Matinino’s sole victory over Canada came back in 2013.

Score Prediction for Canada vs. Martinique

Let’s face it – anything other than a comfortable Canada win would be a colossal shock on Sunday. Not only are the Canucks the stronger team, but they have also enjoyed plenty of success in the lead-up to the tournament.

Ultimately, I would be surprised if Martinique even managed to get on the scoresheet in Kansas. With that in mind, my score prediction for Canada vs. Martinique is 4-0.

My Canada vs. Martinique Betting Pick

Pick
  • Over 3.5 Goals
    2.85

If you’re looking for a safe bet this weekend, backing Canada at 1.17 will at least land you a small profit. However, I recommend opting for the over 3.5 goals market if you want better value.

Herdman’s men have scored over 3.5 goals in six of their previous nine matches, so they are likely to breach Martinique’s backline on numerous occasions on Sunday.
