Brooklyn Nets vs. Detroit Pistons – March 26, 2021
The high-flying Nets visit the bottom of the Conference Detroit in this All-Eastern Conference matchup. Although Brooklyn is having a great season, they recently dropped down from the second spot in the Eastern Conference as the Bucks have leapfrogged them in the standings. However, a win here tonight could see them move back into second and re-focus on chasing down the 76ers for the top spot.
The Pistons are rock bottom, and they are beginning to become detached from the rest of the Conference. This season is already about damage limitations and building for next season for Detroit. However, it would still be nice to avoid the wooden spoon.
They will have hope of avoiding that fight, starting with a win tonight as the home team on the day has won this fixture on four of the last five occasions. They last met a little under two weeks ago in Brooklyn, and the Nets won a very low-scoring game.
The two teams have alternated wins in Detroit over the previous nine meetings there, and if that trend continues tonight, then it will be Brooklyn coming away with the victory.
Nets vs. Pistons Odds
The spread has been cut in half since they last met 12 days ago. This is presumably because the Pistons easily covered it that night, and they have the home-court advantage tonight. The points total looks a shade high which is not a sentence you often use when the Nets are playing. They only combined for 195 points recently, and although you would expect more points tonight, my initial thoughts are they may fall a little short of 225 points.
Nets Team News
The Nets have only lost three of their previous 19 games and are one of the most in-form teams in the league right now. However, two of those defeats came in their last four games, which is a concern. They also both came on the road against the Magic and the Jazz last time out. The defeat against the Jazz was probably their worst performance of the season as they only managed 88 points in a 30 point hammering.
Despite those two recent defeats on the road, they still have the joint best away record in the Conference. If you look at the bigger picture, they have only dropped two of their previous 11 Road trips, which is excellent going.
Here are the latest betting trends for Brooklyn.
|ATS||They have lost five of their previous seven games.|
|SU||The Nets have won five of their last seven matches against Detroit.|
|ATS||Brooklyn has only lost two of their previous 11 games on the road.|
|SU||They have lost eight of their last ten visits to Detroit.|
|ATS||The Nets have only won one of their previous five matches against Eastern Conference opposition.|
|Total||Six of their last eight matches against teams based in the Central Division have gone over the betting total.|
The Nets have the second-best offense in the league, primarily due to them having the best field goal percentage in the NBA this season. What’s worse for the Pistons is that when you analyze their away games alone, they have the best attack in the league, bar none. They also score a little under 40% from the three-point range, which makes them lethal all over the court.
However, their defense is very poor and is shipping on average 115 points per game. This goes up to 118 points per game on the road, which counterbalances their good offense on the road. Although their philosophy of whatever you score, we will score more, has worked for them up until now, they will need to tighten things up at the back if they want to stand any chance of going deep in the playoffs.
It’s no surprise to see that they don’t make many steals per game as they aren’t working hard enough in defense. They almost use the time without the ball to catch a breather and hope that their opponents more before attacking one again.
There is little doubt that James Harden has been the biggest success story this season since he’s move from the Rockets. However, in the absence of Kevin Durant, it would appear that the Nets have become too dependent on Harden as they put in their worst performance of the season with him missing from action last time out. It remains to be seen if he will feature tonight, but this is undoubtedly a reason for Detroit to be hopeful of picking up the win tonight.
The Nets injury list is growing, which is a concern. As well as Durant and Harden, they will miss Irving, Dinwiddie, and Shamet this evening.
The Piston’s mini-revival of back-to-back wins seems to well and truly be over as they have followed up those wins with a couple of defeats to the Bulls and the Pacers. However, the last time they lost to Indiana, they went on to win their next game against the Pelicans, and they will be hoping that lightning strikes twice tonight.
If that is to happen, they will have to overcome their poor home record, which stands at 7-12 from their 19 games. They have also only won one of their last five games at home, which was against the Raptors a week ago. That night they got off to a fast start which certainly helped. They also shot and rebounded well, which they will need to do here to stand any chance of even getting close to the Nets. However, they still made 21 turnovers, that will be heavily punished if they offer that to the Nets tonight.
Here are the latest betting trends for Detroit.
|ATS||The Pistons have won five of their last seven matches.|
|Total||Five of their previous seven games have gone under the betting total.|
|SU||Detroit is 4-12 in their last 16 matches.|
|Total||Only one of their previous five games at home has failed to go under the points total.|
|ATS||They have won four of their last five matches against teams in the Eastern Conference.|
|ATS||The Pistons have only lost two of their previous 11 games against teams based in the Atlantic Division.|
Detroit has a poor offense this season that has been let down by their shooting more often than not. They have a field goal percentage of 44% this season which is amongst the lowest in the league.
The good news is their defense has been good despite allowing their opponents to score at 47% against them from the field goal range. Their defense has been even better at home and is amongst the top five in the NBA this season. This is what they need to rebuild their team around, and it gives them real hope that this poor form will change.
However, their defensive rebounding has been an issue, and if they allow a sharp-shooting team like Brooklyn second chances, then there will be only one outcome tonight.
The rebuilding we spoke about has already started as the Pistons completed a deadline deal trade which saw Delon Wright go to the Kings in exchange for Corey Joseph and two second-round picks. Perhaps more importantly, the business saves the Pistons around $6 million and will allow them more capital to spend in the off-season.
The Pistons also have a long list of absentees as they will be without Okafor and Hayes, while Smith remains doubtful. However, they are hopeful that both McGruder and Diallo will return tonight.
Nets vs. Pistons Betting Pick
Nets To Win-215
The Nets will be hoping to bounce back immediately tonight following their humiliating defeat to Utah last time out. They have the perfect opportunity to do that against last-placed Detroit. It also shouldn’t matter as much that they are missing their two-star players and will be an opportunity for others to shine.
I believe they will win tonight, but I won’t take them on against the handicap as the bookmakers appear to have underestimated the Pistons time and time again recently.
