Brisbane Roar vs. Sydney FC – A-League, March 6, 2021
Despite failing to win any of their previous four games, the Roar still find themselves sitting third on the A-League ladder – three points ahead of ninth-place Sydney FC.
However, the defending champions visit Dolphin Stadium in similar form on Saturday, March 6, having suffered back-to-back defeats.
Who will come out on top this weekend? I assess the odds before giving my Brisbane Roar vs. Sydney FC prediction and betting pick.
Brisbane Roar vs. Sydney FC Odds
The top online betting sites view Brisbane (2.40) as the slight favorite to win on Saturday. But as you can see, the odds gap for this matchup is pretty small.
Sydney FC (2.70) hasn’t started the season in convincing fashion. Still, you’d be foolish to write off the Sky Blues. Could the draw (3.50) be the way to go here?
Let’s take a closer look at the teams.
Brisbane Roar vs. Sydney FC Preview
When Brisbane thrashed Melbourne Victory 5-2 at the beginning of February, it felt like the Queenslanders were laying down a serious marker. Four straight wins saw the Roar cement their place at the top end of the A-League ladder, but it’s been all downhill since then.
After losing 2-0 to Macarthur, Warren Moon’s men recorded back-to-back goalless draws. In their previous game, they were beaten 3-1 by Perth.
A Jack Hingert goal meant that Brisbane headed into half-time on level terms with the Glory, but second-half strikes from Diego Castro and Burno Fornaroli saw Perth claim all three points. Moon’s men racked up 20 attempts last time out, yet they only managed to register four shots on target.
Having netted five goals in a four-game hot streak earlier in the campaign, Dylan Wenzel-Halls has failed to score in each of his last four appearances. If the Roar want to climb up the ladder again, the promising young forward will need to rediscover some form.
Still, only one side has conceded fewer goals than Brisbane this term, so the team has solid defensive foundations to build on.
Let’s face it – nobody expected Sydney FC to be ten points behind the Mariners at this stage in the campaign.
Of course, the Mariners have taken the A-League by storm this season. But given that Steve Corica’s men have only managed to win three of their opening eight matches, they are already miles behind the early frontrunners.
Back-to-back wins over Macarthur and Wellington pointed towards an upturn in form for the reigning champs. But since then, Sydney FC has only managed to take one point from their last three outings.
In a repeat of last season’s Grand Final, the Sky Blues lost 3-2 to Melbourne City last week. Only a few days later, the Bulls beat Sydney FC 1-0, with Paulo Retre seeing red after just 38 minutes.
Having conceded nine goals in eight games, Corica’s men currently boast the best defensive record in the A-League. But they will need to start scoring more goals if they want to defend their crown.
Brisbane Roar vs. Sydney FC Pick
We all know that both Brisbane and Sydney FC will be desperate to avoid defeat on Saturday. The teams have registered a series of negative results in recent weeks, so they will both be aiming to get back on track this weekend.
At the end of the day, I think the draw is the best bet for this matchup. Both sides are expected to approach Saturday’s game with caution, meaning they are likely to produce a tense and low-scoring encounter.
