There are two A-League games taking place this Sunday, April 3, the first of which sees Brisbane Roar welcome Newcastle Jets to Moreton Daily Stadium.

The two sides are separated by five points on the A-League ladder, with eleventh-place Brisbane trailing ninth-place Newcastle. As we head into the business end of the season, both teams are in desperate need of points to keep their six-top hopes alive.

Brisbane (2.20) comes into this clash as the bookmakers’ favorite. As you can see, though, the high price for the home win suggests that Newcastle (3.10) stands a decent chance of picking up a positive result on Sunday.

The big odds for the draw (3.30) are bound to attract plenty of attention. That said, Brisbane and Newcastle have played a combined total of 36 A-League games this season and only have six draws between them.

There is no hiding the fact that Brisbane is not in a good place right now. Having lost 11 of their 18 league games this season, the Queenslanders find themselves second from bottom in the standings.

It looks as though the Roar had turned the corner when they secured back-to-back wins against Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory last month. However, they swiftly returned to losing ways.

When you look at the bigger picture, the Queenslanders have suffered six defeats in their past eight games. No wonder they sit eight points shy of the top six!

It goes without saying that Moon’s boys must start winning if they want to qualify for the finals series. If they suffer a fourth straight loss on Sunday, they will almost certainly finish outside the top six this season.

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Newcastle has been one of the most inconsistent teams in the A-League this year. Still, the club sits just three points outside the top six following an upturn in form.

At the beginning of March, the Jets suffered three successive defeats. However, they come into Sunday’s clash on a three-game unbeaten streak – having claimed two wins and a draw since their last loss.

Arthur Papas’ men have been highly productive at the other end of the field, too. With 30 goals to their name, only first-place Melbourne City has scored more goals than Newcastle this season.

Beka Mikeltadze has netted nine goals in 16 games, making him Jamie Maclaren’s biggest rival in the Golden Boot race. Meanwhile, Daniel Penha has racked up a mammoth ten assists in 18 outings.

Brisbane heads into this clash on a three-game losing streak. On the flip side, Newcastle carries a three-game unbeaten run into Sunday’s showdown. In terms of form, the Jets have the upper hand.

It is also worth noting that Brisbane has the second-worst defensive record in the competition. Given that Papas’ men are the second-highest scorers, the chances of the Roar keeping a clean sheet are slim.

Having taken everything into consideration, I’m confident that Newcastle will leave Moreton Daily Stadium with all three points. Unfortunately, Brisbane looks set to suffer a fourth straight loss.
