Brighton and Hove Albion vs. Tottenham Hotspur – EPL, January 31, 2021
For all Brighton’s organization and attractive passing play, this fixture would seem to be a very good opportunity for Spurs to pick up another victory. But the injury to Harry Kane changes all that.
The England captain was taken off at half time of Tottenham’s game with Liverpool on Thursday and is now a major doubt for this one. Will the Seagulls be able to use that to their advantage, though?
Brighton and Hove Albion vs. Tottenham Hotspur Odds
BetOnline still makes Spurs the favorite to win this – even after the injury news concerning Harry Kane. But the odds are much closer than they would have been – as I would have expected the London club to be odds on to pick up three points. That does make a Spurs win more profitable now, though.
Brighton and Hove Albion vs. Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
After the win away at Leeds two weeks ago, the goalless draw with fellow struggler Fulham at home on Wednesday will have been a huge disappointment for Graham Potter and his Brighton players. The inability to win a single game at the Amex this season has been a big problem all year.
Scoring has been a problem all season as well, although Brighton’s goals for column does look a little better than some of the teams around it in the table. Neal Maupay has done his part, but there is not much help coming from anywhere else. More worrying is the absence of Tariq Lamptey on Sunday, though. The chance of a home win would be much higher with the young defender available.
Joe Mourinho will be concentrating his game plan on who he chooses to replace Harry Kane. It seems very unlikely that Tottenham’s top goalscorer will be fit enough for this game after rolling both ankles against Liverpool in the week. The injury might not be as serious as initially feared – but it is a huge problem for Spurs.
Vinicius may be given a chance as the main man after playing well in the cup a few weeks ago. He certainly seems to have a better chance of replacing Kane than Gareth Bale, who Mourinho seems unsure of as a central striker. He may end up opting for Heung-min Son in that role, though. But any of those choices should end up giving the Brighton defense a tough time on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur to Win+128
A lot will be made of Kane’s absence in the run-up to this game (including in this preview!), but I’m not sure it will have such a massive effect on the final result. Aside from the game against Liverpool in the week when the champions outplayed the London club, Spurs has started to show a killer instinct again – and should be able to beat a limited Brighton whoever plays upfront.
