Brest vs. Monaco – Ligue 1, October 4, 2020
Monaco goes in search of their fourth win in five outings this weekend, with Brest hosting Niko Kovac’s side at Stade Francis-Le Ble on Sunday, October 4.
The Monegasques have made a decent start to life under their new head coach, although they must be wary of a Brest team that has won two of their previous three Ligue 1 games.
I discuss the bookies’ odds before providing my Brest vs. Monaco prediction and betting pick.
Brest vs. Monaco Odds
Monaco’s four-point lead over Brest means the away side comes into this clash as the favorite. However, the top online sportsbooks obviously believe the home side can get something from this game.
The odds gap isn’t as big as I expected it to be, although Brest’s home advantage has probably swayed the bookies somewhat. Having said that, Monaco has already picked up two wins on their travels this term.
Brest’s campaign could not have started any worse. Olivier Dall’Oglio’s side was hammered 4-0 by Nimes on Matchday 1, while Brendan Chardonnet was sent off. Granted, the Pirates upped their game on Matchday 2. But they were still beaten by 3-2 Marseille.
The Brittany club appeared to be on the rise following back-to-back victories. After seeing off Dijon, Brest got the better of newly-promoted Lorient. But the good times didn’t last long.
Despite taking the lead twice last weekend, Dall’Oglio’s men were eventually beaten 3-2 by Angers. The team managed to notch up 14 shots last time out, six of which were on target, yet their defensive frailties were exposed once again.
Only two teams – first-place Rennes and third-place Montpellier – have scored more goals than Brest this season. However, the Pirates currently have the worst defensive record in the division.
Monaco has also netted nine goals this term, but their defense has been a lot tighter. Sure, I don’t think Niko Kovac will be overly happy that his side to conceded seven goals across the opening five games. But at least the Monegasques are looking sharp in attack.
You probably won’t be surprised to hear that Wissam Ben Yedder is leading to way for the principality club. Last season’s Golden Boot winner has bagged three goals in his last two appearances, including a double in the 3-2 victory over Strasbourg last weekend.
Having already seen off Metz, Nantes, and Strasbourg this term, the 2016/17 champion will surely be dreaming of challenging for the title this time around. And with PSG stuttering in the early stages of the season, it feels like now is the perfect time for Monaco to get as many points on the board as possible.
Brest vs. Monaco Prediction and Pick
Monaco to Win2.15
With Monaco’s forward line firing on all cylinders and Brest’s defense struggling to keep out goals, odds of 2.15 for the away win are looking very tasty in my opinion.
Yes, the Monegasques are still adapting to Kovac’s methods, and it’s going to take some time for the new head coach to fully bed in. But I’m confident that Monaco has enough quality to overcome Brest this weekend.
