Brazil vs. Peru – 2021 Copa America (June 17)

| June 16, 2021 6:42 am PDT

Brazil will aim to maintain their winning start to the 2021 Copa America when Peru visits Rio de Janeiro this Thursday, June 17. The hosts kicked off the tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Venezuela at the weekend, putting them top of Group A.

The Peruvians have yet to open their 2021 Copa America account. Ricardo Gareca’s men aren’t expected to cause Brazil too many problems, having won just one of their last nine games in all competitions.

Anyway, if you’re here for my Brazil vs. Peru prediction and pick – keep reading!

Latest Odds for Brazil vs. Peru

Peru to Win11.00

Those of you considering backing Peru to upset Brazil can get seriously attractive odds. Of course, Tite’s side is the heavy favorite for a reason. But the high prices for the draw and the Peru win are bound to generate plenty of attention.

It is no real surprise that all the leading online sportsbooks favor the host nation to win this one. After all, Brazil hasn’t lost since 2019.

Previewing Brazil vs. Peru

With so much controversy surrounding the 2021 Copa America, there was a sense that Brazil may slip up against Venezuela in the opening game. As it turned out, Seleção claimed a hugely straightforward win.

PSG defender Marquinhos put the hosts ahead midway through the first half before Neymar doubled Brazil’s lead from the penalty spot. Substitute Gabriel Barbosa then came off the bench to complete the scoring.

It is worth pointing out that Venezuela offered very little in attack. In fact, they only managed to register a single shot on target and saw just 38% of the ball.

Still, Tite’s men had to get the job done – and that’s exactly what they did.

The defending Copa America champions have now won each of their last eight matches in all competitions, scoring 19 goals in the process. Better still, they have achieved seven shutouts in their previous eight outings.

Tite’s men will be confident of extending their winning streak to nine games against off-form Peru

By contrast, the Peruvians almost headed into the 2021 Copa America on an eight-match winless run. They registered two draws and six defeats between October 2019 and June 2021 before finally picking up a win.

Goals from Christian Cueva and Luis Advincula handed Gareca’s men a rare 2-1 victory over Ecuador last week. But having seen just 30% possession, they were lucky to win that game.

The Incas last faced Brazil back in October 2020, suffering a 4-2 loss on home soil. Neymar netted a hat-trick on that occasion, and it wouldn’t be a shock if the two nations produced a similar scoreline this time around.

Brazil and Peru have faced each other 48 times over the years, while the Peruvians have only managed to register five wins. The head-to-head record tells you everything you need to know about Thursday’s contest.

My Brazil vs. Peru Betting Pick

  • Brazil to Win

At the end of the day, anything other than a comfortable Brazil win would be a colossal shock here. Not only do the Peruvians have a dismal record in this fixture, but they also head into the tournament on a poor run.

On the flip side, Tite’s men will be brimming with belief after seeing off Venezuela with ease. I’m backing Neymar and co. to seal back-to-back wins when Peru comes to town.
