Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Red Bull Leipzig – Bundesliga, October 31, 2020

Borussia Monchengladbach lost the opening match of the season to Borussia Dortmund, but is unbeaten in seven games since, including two in the Champions League, where they recorded two 2-2 draws with Inter and Real Madrid. Gladbach even had a 2-0 lead over Real Madrid until the 87th minute, but two late goals from the Spanish champions took two points from the Germans. They are in the 6th position in Bundesliga with eight points from five games.

Red Bull Leipzig, on the other side, is only one of three unbeaten sides (Leverkusen and Wolfsburg) in Bundesliga and is on a three-game winning streak in the league. However, their four-game winning run in all competitions ended at Old Trafford in a devastating and surprising 5-0 defeat to Manchester United. Still, the Red Bulls are at the top of the Bundesliga with 13 points.

A 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in midweek extended Borussia Monchengladbach’s unbeaten streak in all competitions to six matches (W2, D4), all of which saw both teams find the back of the net, while five witnessed Gladbach score the opening goal. However, scoring from open play in Bundesliga was the main strength of the hosts, who have scored a league-high three goals from corners, a joint-league high three from penalties, and only two from open play!

Both of Gladbach’s Bundesliga matches at Borussia-Park this campaign have finished with a draw, and they’re now on the verge of drawing their first three home league matches of a season for the first time in the post-war era. Still, the impressive 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in their previous home game did continue a promising trend in which Gladbach have opened the scoring in six consecutive competitive matches at home.

Marco Rose will be without Louis Jordan Beyer (illness), Mamadou Doucoure (muscle), Andreas Poulsen (shoulder), and Denis Zakaria (knee).

Gladbach faces a tough rival in league-leaders Leipzig who is enjoying their best-ever start to a Bundesliga season (W4, D1), and can put some of that down to their prowess in the air as a third of their goals have come from headers. Nonetheless, a 5-0 loss at Old Trafford in midweek handed boss Julian Nagelsmann his biggest loss as Leipzig manager.

The visitors are, at least, enjoying a club record nine-game without a loss Bundesliga streak on the road, one they’ll be confident in extending given they’ve won all four last away H2H duels, three after leading at halftime. They’ve opened the scoring in four consecutive Bundesliga visits against all opponents as well.

Julian Nagelsmann cannot count on Amadou Haidara (illness), Lukas Klostermann (knee), Konrad Laimer (knee), and Nordi Mukiele (muscle).

These rivals have met on eight occasions before, and Gladbach never beat Leipzig, as the Red Bulls are leading the all-time series with five wins and three draws. Leipzig won four of the last five meetings, while they were victorious in each of four visits to Borussia-Park. Considering how Gladbach is playing recently, I cannot bet against them in this one, but I will back goals instead. Six of eight H2Hs produced goals on both ends, while five of them produced BTTS and Over 2.5 goals, which is my bet here.
