Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04 – Bundesliga, October 24, 2020

Dortmund bounced back from a couple of defeats to Augsburg (Bundesliga) and Bayern Munich (Super Cup) with a pair of wins over Freiburg and Hoffenheim. Borussia didn’t allow a goal in those two wins, but they conceded three in a 3-1 road loss to Lazio in the Champions League in midweek. The reason for this is the absence of several defenders, and the bill of health is not getting any better prior to the Revierderby. Lucien Favre’s side is in 3rd place in Bundesliga with nine points from four matches.

Schalke 04 is getting accustomed to life without David Wagner, who was sacked in late September after the Miners failed to get a win in the 18th consecutive Bundesliga match. Following three defeats to start this season, Schalke finally recorded the first point in a 1-1 home draw with Union Berlin. They escaped the bottom of the standings with that points, and are now in 17th position.

Borussia Dortmund Team News and Stats

The Revierderby has thrown up some classic outcomes in the last few years, with the previous five held here witnessing an aggregate 13-10 result to Dortmund. Visiting Schalke may find themselves limited in attack this time though, given that Borussia restricted their opposition on the day to a league-low 23 shots on goal in this campaign.

Dortmund opened their Bundesliga home campaign with two commanding HT/FT victories that saw them clear a -2 handicap. Recent history hints at another win here considering Dortmund won all three opening Bundesliga matches at home in four of the previous five seasons.

Lucien Favre cannot count on Manuel Akanji (illness), Thorgan Hazard (muscle), Marcel Schmelzer (knee), Nico Schulz (calf), and Dan-Axel Zagadou (knee).

Schalke 04 Team News and Stats

Despite picking up their first point last weekend (1-1), Schalke is still enduring the longest active Bundesliga winless streak (a club-record 20 games), as well as the longest run without a clean sheet (16). In fact, their -14 goal difference and average of 4.0 goals allowed per match are the worst opening four-game statistics Schalke witnessed in any Bundesliga campaign during the post-war era.

It’ll come as little surprise then that the visitors have failed to win a Bundesliga game on the road since November 2019, with eight of their nine losses following witnessing Schalke trail at halftime and six seeing them lose by a 3+ goal difference, which includes a 4-0 thumping in the previous derby at Signal Iduna Park.

Manuel Baum will be without Ralf Fahrmann (groin), Ozan Kabak (suspension), and Suat Serdar (muscle).

Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04 Betting Pick

Dortmund won three of the previous ten H2H encounters (D5, L2), while they lost only one of seven meetings at Signal Iduna Park. Although Schalke failed to find the back of the net in the last two H2Hs, Dortmund is still struggling with injuries at the back, as four of their defenders are out of this clash, so I am backing the Miners to score at least one goal here. However, I am pretty sure Dortmund will bounce back from a loss at Lazio and secure three points on Saturday.
