Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich – Bundesliga, November 7, 2020

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from a loss to Lazio in the Champions League with four consecutive wins in both the UCL and Bundesliga, without allowing a single goal along the way. Lucien Favre’s side surprisingly has the best defense in Germany’s top flight as they conceded just two goals in the opening six rounds, and those two goals came in the second round in a 2-0 loss to Augsburg. Dortmund is tied with Bayern Munich at the top of the table with 15 points.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, is even in better form as they recorded nine straight victories, including the latest one 6-2 over Salzburg in the Champions League.

The reigning champions are the most serious candidates to defend the title this year, but we will see whether they can pass the toughest test against the arch-rivals Dortmund. The Bavarians are at the top of the Bundesliga with the same amount of points as Dortmund, but with a better goal difference.

Borussia Dortmund Team News and Stats

Tied on equal points at the top of the standings ahead of this round, there seems a no better time for another Der Klassiker Derby between the division’s best defense, Borussia Dortmund, and the most prolific offense, Bayern Munich. The defending champions Bayern dominated this derby (W61, D33, L33), but the old foe Dortmund has its 100% Bundesliga home record intact (W3) and is yet to allow a goal at Signal Iduna Park this season.

That defensive strength comes from taking control of matches thanks to a league-high 63% ball possession rate, yet with 50% of Dortmunds Bundesliga goals at home being scored in the final 30 minutes of games, it’s clear the hosts like to attack late on. Similarly, 60% of the goals they’ve netted in the league’s home H2H duels since 2015 have come during this period as well.

Lucien Favre will be without Emre Can (illness), Mats Hummels (muscle), Marcel Schmelzer (knee), and Dan-Axel Zagadou (knee).

Bayern Munich Team News and Stats

With Bayern however, goals never seem to miss out, and their 24 goals scored following the opening six rounds has broken a record set in 1973/74. In fact, the past midweek, the Bundesliga champions became the first team in UEFA Champions League (UCL) history to score four goals in the last 15 minutes of a match as they dismantled Salzburg 6-2. That gave them a ninth win in a row in all competitions – a streak that ominously started in the last H2H.

That 6-2 win also made it four consecutive wins on the road in which both teams scored, all of which saw goals in both halves and the opening goal by the 15th minute. The previous four Bundesliga H2H encounters at Signal Iduna Park also saw the first goal scored in the opening 45 minutes, always by the game’s eventual winner.

Hans-Dieter Flick cannot count Alphonso Davies (ankle), Leon Goretzka (calf), Tanguy Kouassi (thigh), and Niklas Sule (illness).

Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich Betting Pick

Bayern Munich won eight of the previous ten H2H encounters (L2), including the last three, while the Bavarians were victorious in the past two meetings at Signal Iduna Park.

Interestingly, only two of the last seven H2H duels produced goals on both sides, which is surprising considering the attacking power of the teams throughout the years. None of the previous three H2H matches produced goals on both ends, and I think that negative trend will stop now, so I am backing BTTS and Over 2.5 goals.
