Boca Juniors vs. Racing Club – Copa Libertadores, December 23, 2020
Boca Juniors and Racing Club clash for the second leg of their all-Argentine Copa Libertadores quarter-final on Wednesday, December 23.
Racing edged the first leg 1-0, but with La Bombonera hosting the second leg, Boca is expected to turn things around and advance to the semi-finals.
After looking at the bookmakers’ odds, I share my Boca Juniors vs. Racing Club prediction and betting pick.
Boca Juniors vs. Racing Club Odds
As expected, 10bet is favoring Boca Juniors (1.91) to win the second leg after 90 minutes. But a 1-0 victory would take the game to extra-time.
Racing Club (3.75) heads into Wednesday’s showdown as the clear outsider, although the underdogs have a lead to protect.
Boca Juniors vs. Racing Club Preview
It’s fair to say that Boca hasn’t exactly been in the best form of late. Miguel Angel Russo’s side has failed to win any of their last four outings in all competitions, with back-to-back domestic draws adding to the team’s struggles.
Still, the Argentine champions cruised through the Copa Libertadores group stage unbeaten. Four wins and two draws saw Boca finish seven points clear at the top of Group H – and they only conceded one goal along the way.
Russo’s men made light work of Libertad, Caracas, and Independiente Medellin. But they were pushed all the way by Internacional in the Round of 16. Boca eventually advanced on penalties, despite having Agustin Obando sent off in the second leg.
Carlos Tevez has been strangely quiet in the Copa Libertadores this term, scoring just one goal in six appearances. Needless to say, Los Xeneizes will be hoping that the former Man Utd, Man City, and Juventus star can step up to the mark and fire the team into the semi-finals.
Like Boca, Racing also reached the quarter-finals following a successful penalty shootout. La Academia shocked everyone by holding Flamengo to successive 1-1 draws before knocking out the defending champions.
However, Sebastian Beccacece’s side suffered two poor defeats soon after. A loss to Arsenal Sarandi saw Racing drop into the relegation group of Argentina’s top-flight, with another defeat to Velez Sarsfield coming a week later.
Many believed Beccacece’s men would struggle to compete with Boca, yet they proved their doubters wrong. Racing enjoyed the majority of possession and registered 12 shots in the first leg, with Lorenzo Melgarejo scoring the only goal of the game.
Of course, facing Boca at La Bombonera is a completely different test altogether. If Beccacece’s men sit back and defend their advantage, they could get torn apart. Racing may just have to go for broke and attempt to build on their lead.
Boca Juniors vs. Racing Club Betting Pick
Boca Juniors to Win1.91
Racing performed well in the first leg, dominating Boca for much of the game. But I’m backing the Argentine champions to gain their revenge on Wednesday.
At the end of the day, Boca is far stronger than Racing. Russo’s men have not been at their best of late, yet I’m confident that they will rise to the occasion when it really matters.
